Plans for Xmas Rig, good setup? Need advice.

Hey everyone,

Wow I havnt been here in a while, anyways i'm planning on building a computer this christmas. The budget will be about 1000$ CAD (858$ American) not exactly sure about that but i think thats a good figure. I am planning on ordering it all from WWW.Ncix.COM anyone have any experience with them etc? Anyways heres what im looking at for a build. I want it to be decent for gaming, not necesarily overclocked, but u know , and good for general use.

To cut back on costs I'm gonna use the video card in my current pc ( MSI FX 5200 128 mb) that will save some bucks. I will probably upgrade later.

Actually I just found thats a AGP card and wont work on most new mobos, right?

Mobo: A8N-Sli Deluxe (SLI Nforce4)or DFI Lanparty 4 (SLI Nforce 4) or Msi K8n Neo 4 Platinum (SLI Nforce4)

Which one is best?

CPU: AMD anthlon 64 3200 Venice Core (939) 512K L2 Cache 90NM Sounds good right?

Heatsink: The CPU comes with a retail one right? is it worth buying a better one?

PSU: OCZ Powerstream 520 W I love the look of that PSU how well does it perform?

Case: LIAN-LI PC60B Plus 18IN ATX Aluminum Black Tower Case Maybe expensive but they are so sleek

HD; WD Caviar 80 GB I'm not looking for too much space so this will be fine, plus saves sone money

Memory (RAM): Corsair Value Select Pc3200 1 GB (2x 512) Good choice or witll it cryple my system?

or

OCZ Value Ram, 1 GB

Which ones better?

Video Card: Whats a nice cheap Nvidia 6800?

DVD: NEC DVD Burner. wtv

Floppy, mouse keyboard, is alrdy taken care of.

Monitor: Looking at the ViewSonic E90F 19 Inch Black 1600x1200

Did I forget anything?

That comes to just over 1300$ CAD so i might need to cut back some places, where can i do that?

What do you guys think, any opinions are greatly apreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Non-SLI motherboard would save money, and you wouldn't have to buy an SLI-approved power supply. And I agree that Lian-Li cases are gorgeous (I have one) but you could save money there, too.

Stock heatsink/fan will be fine. Actually, you'll void your processor's warranty if you install a "better" one.

Corsair value select is excellent RAM.

Here is the list if SLI certified parts. Power supplies are near the bottom of the page.
Antec has some pretty nice cases that have good airflow and are less expensive than the lian-li cases.

i have the msi neo 4 platinum for one of my personal builds and i love it
people on here will tend to tell you that msi isnt a good brand but thats not true
between asus and msi i believe they are the top brands in motherboards out there now
i build a lot of computers for college kids and i picked the neo4 platinum because i liked the way it was set up and the extra options that it had were very nice
i have it with my 3700+ and they run amazingly together
i would definently recommend it
but any way you go you cant go wrong
i use asus boards all the time too and they are very good boards as well
both very solid and dependible

All of those motherboards are good. Which is "best" is probably more a matter of opinion than anything else; there are fans of all of them around here. Your build looks good, but by picking a premium (SLI) board, a premium (SLI-rated) power supply, and a premium case, you don't have many places to save significant money. I wouldn't use cheaper ram, I wouldn't lower the processor, and you could hardly get a cheaper hard disk.

The best deal on a 6800-class video card from NCIX right now is probably this one:

the bios has many options for setup
very easy overclockability if you want it (for cpu memory and video card)
it also comes with some nice monitors for temperature (cpu and system) that run in windows that i have found to be very accurate
also dynamic overclocking in windows
easy shut down and boot up timers
i know asus boards have alot of this stuff as well but i found the msi ones to be a bit easier to use and more in depth
also i really like the way the board was laid out
very easy to instlal everything
the only weird thing was the placement of the firewire header
hard to reach it from the front of the case
the msi d bracket is also nice
it comes with it and attaches to the mobo
and is very helpful if something isnt working properly
has error code that you look up in the manual
i think overall it is just a good solid nicelooking easy to use board

the asus board has alot of these options as well
i just prefer the msi interface more and i think its a little easier to use

i dont know much about dfi havent built with them all that much

why do you want SLI? if you want to save costs cut out the SLI b/c you won't ever need it if you don't plan on having high-end cards bought at the same time.

I have to agree. One 6800GT will always be better than two 6600GT's.

Well if i decided not to go SLI I could get this board:

AMD64 S939 MSI K8N NEO4 PLATINUM NF4 PCIE $165.00

and one

ASUS PCIE GF6 EN6800GT 256M 2DVI BOX 6800GT $315.00

OR Maybe an X800 of some sort?

Its the same as the other just not SLI right?

How would that work?

Yeah, that should work. I'm not familiar with Canadian currency, but is that enough savings to go with a 6800GT?

Anyone familiar with a 6800GS? I think that's kinda in between the 6600GT and 6800GT. But if I were you I would try to find a cheaper case so you could afford a 6800GT, but it's up to you.

OK now the only decision lies in the Video Card, Which Card do you think is best?

eVGA 6800 GT
Asus 6800 GT
MSI 6800 GT

Saphire X800 GT or GTO of some sort? I dont know much about ATI cards.

Which ones best, looking for the best card in the 300$ dollar range (canadian)

You might look at the X800 GTO too, I think it performs between the 6800GT and 6600GT...and I think it's within your price range.

So what is the real benefit of SLI then?

(Wow, upgraded to Firefox 1.5 and lost the spell check)

The idea is to put the best video card in and then you can put another one in in the future...but it doesn't really work when you put in the oldest SLI card, since it's a better deal to upgrade to next fastest card.

And you have to have the budget to do it...you don't want to sacrafice other components just so you can get a SLI board and power supply.

As the local SLI cynic, I'll say that the real benefit of SLI is to the video card mfrs, because they can sell two cards to people who would normally buy only one. I think that for all but the most die-hard gamers, SLI is a waste of money. But it's their money, and if they want to spend it on premium SLI rigs...
