im clueless. building my own computer within 3 months, need help w/ components

well my dad has always bought a dell because of their customer service(or lack of it i can't figure it out) and it is not working well for gaming at all. I am looking into buying my own computer for around $1250. All i will be doing on this computer is a) playing currents cames. ie.hl2 bf2 FEAR and cs 1.6.
b) surfing the net wirelessly unless i can get a cable run to my room.

that is about it. nothing else will be done. i have no idea how much memory will be needed, what mobo to get, or anything else. i do know that you guys are a great group of people and can help me. will wireless internet get lagg really high when playing online?

I know there are probably 1354982357 versions of this same question right under mine but it is just easier to post a new one. It also give you crazy computer freaks something to do. Don't even try to deny that.

Thank you for your time.

AMD or INTEL?

You should still read all the "Help me build my gaming rig" threads to get an idea of what goes into one.

Does this include keyboard, monitor, speakers, mouse etc?

Connecting wirelessly to a router should add very little lag to games. That's the way I am set up and I notice no difference between wireless and wired. Do you have a wireless router? What brand?

OK, this doesn't include case...you'll have to pick one out that you like

ASUS A8N-E
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3500BPBOX - Retail
Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-480 ATX12V 480W Power Supply - Retail
eVGA 256-P2-N376-AX Geforce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail
CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model VS1GBKIT400 - Retail
Seagate Barracuda 120GB
LITE-ON Black IDE DVD Burner Model SOHW-1693S Black - Retail
NEC Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive
Microsoft Windows XP HOME Edition With Service Pack 2 - OEM

I think that's about $1100, doesn't include case like I said, and you could probably get a bigger hard drive, or maybe faster CPU.

Oh, and a Linksys wireless NIC

I'd research those parts (try newegg.com, if in the US) and see how much that's going to run you.

venice and san diego are the revised cores. don't get a clawhammer becuase they are the older versions of these two cores. get the 3700+ San Diego for the best performance to cash ratio.

Asus board of some make A8N, im guess your not gonna go SLI,
so perhaps as a single one pci-e 16x the X1800XT pro... but thats like kinda expensive so ill suggest something one down, eVGA or actually the ASUS Extreme 7800GTX 256mb (or 512mb but thats if u want to fork over $700+)
hmmm i cant really suggest any cpus other then what they suggest a San Diego
2gb of corsair ram 3200 value version rather then the XMS
100-250gb hdd, unless u want to setup like

WD Raptor 10000RPM 74gb and for storage an 100-200gb hdd SATA

and then power supply antec is good... 500-600 should be enough and gives room for upgrade. what else do u need...

ummm monitors even tho u dont need one, the one i plan to get is really good reviews, and its about 300

Where did you find this? The only Corsair Value Select that i was able to find that was 2GB and was dual channel was a pair of 240-pin DDR2 dimms.

Once you cdecide which motherboard to use, go to the manufacturers website and check the list of RAM that they have there. Or use the configurator at corsair to be sure you order a compatable part number. Don't just get whatever you can find. If the architecture of the modules isn't supported by the motherboard the RAM won't work. That is more common with 1 Gb modules than with smaller ones.

Here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145579

Actually, that originally was the listing for the 1GB kit...tis why the model number is VS1GBKIT400. It should be VS2GBKIT400C3.
