If ya had only 1500 bucks

Was hoping to skate on allot of component research due to being busier than all get out. Got a pal who wants a PC built for him and target dollars at $1500. Has new Digital Video camcorder, but not much experience. Has boy who likes to game. My last build was before SATA and certainly before PCI Express. Wants an ALL-IN-Wonder vid card for the TV tuner. AIW600Pro? What components do you guys recommend?

$1500 for the tower only, or the entire PC with keyboard, mouse and monitor ?

For the tower only it's pretty easy. Recently I built a PC for two guys. . both pretty similar (the PCs), for 1000 (without monitor).

The PCs had:
some case
Enermax 400W PSU
Sapphire X800Pro PCI-E
Audigy 2 ZS graphics card
Abit AG8 mainboard
P4 3 GHz
1 WD SATA hard drive with 160 GB
Plextor PX-716SA DVD burner
Plextor PX-130A DVD-ROM drive

He needs a firewire input for the camcorder. The Audigy 2 ZS has one, or you can look for a motherboard with onboard firewire.

There's nothing special to know about PCI-E. You get a graphics card for PCI-E, plug it in, that's it

The AIW only exists with analog TV tuner, though. So if he has analog TV, that card will be ok. Otherwise he needs separate TV and graphics cards.

$1500 for just the tower is plenty. I usually don't have that much to spend.

How about this?

ASUS A8N-E
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3800BPBOX - Retail
Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 550W Power Supply - Retail
eVGA 256-P2-N525-AX Geforce 7800GTX 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail
CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model VS2GBKIT400C3 - Retail
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value SB0400 8 (7.1) Channels PCI Interface Sound Card - Retail
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
LITE-ON Black IDE DVD Burner Model SOHW-1693S Black - Retail
NEC Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive
Microsoft Windows XP HOME Edition With Service Pack 2 - OEM

$1400 or so...doesn't include TV tuner or case, the case is something you can pick out since you have to look at it (well your pal can pick it out), not us.

Might be overkill if there isn't going to be heavy gaming

I'd second Blue's build but I would downgrade the video card a bit and throw in a good TV tuner such as the Hauppauge PVR-350. I'd downgrade to the 7800 GT. It would be a good combo and give better results for both gaming and video editing due to the hardware video encoding on the tuner and the superb game performance of the 7800 GT. The top AIW card can't match it.

Add a case that he likes and you'll have a killer PC.

Hmmm....would be my first AMD build......how might a staunch INTEL user then explain his loss of his fig leaf? I might embarrass myself by screwing something up!
