Questions about my first build
I'm looking at building a machine for editing video footage on. Nothing over-the-top fancy, just something simple. Now here are my questions:
1. What CPU speed would be good for editing video footage? 2. How much RAM would be good for editing video footage? 3. What size hard drive would be ideal? 4. What kind of graphics card would be good? Thanks. RapidArp Last edited by rapidarp; 12-04-2005 at 01:01 PM. |

Well.....depends really. I have a chance at getting everything at once (not including a monitor) or getting it piece by piece.

It's best to get everything at once. But we really need a budget, so we can recommend parts for you...
Do you do any gaming? |

I won't be doing any gaming on this machine (the local Game Place has the latest stuff). Umm.....i'd say about, $500-$1,000 i guess.

OK...here's an idea:
Intel P4 640 (or 650 if budget allows) 1-2GB of RAM 320GB hard drive? X300 Pro (basic video card...) DVD burner that should give you an idea. Do you think 320GB of hard drive space would be enough? This doesn't include case, power supply, or OS. Do you already have a monitor, keyboard, etc? You might take a look on this forum...there's plenty of builds similar that you might get ideas from. |

Processor: get the fastest one you can afford
HD: video uses a lot of space, so get a big one, 16 Mb cache would be preferable RAM: 1 Gb, 2 if it fits the budget Video card: irrelavent for video editing, any halfway decent card will do

Go with AMD instead. Why would anyone go with Intel on a budget system?!
Check my thread - it list some basic parts and I'm aiming for a cost effective build: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=146475 The main difference being you want much more RAM and HD then me, and a simpler graphics card. You should also make sure the Mobo can support the memory - find its manual and check the related tables. My choice might not work for you. - 2GB Kingston/Corsair RAM - not sure if 2g is sold in one stick, should be 2x 1gb DDR400 - make sure the mobo can support and fit it - ~$160 - Internal DVD/CD burner - 19" Trinitron (.25, Viesonic/Dell/Sony works, and they should be cheaper then the flat panels), - Radeon 9550 (run cool, and prices should be very low. I remember that at the time Radeon budget cards were superior to GForce). - HD - Seagate or Western Digital. newegg.com has good prices on parts, just make sure its all retail.
