Help With Static!!!!!

how long are the intervals between when you have to ground youself? for example: can you ground yourself once and then install a processor? or do you have to keep grounding yourself throughout the job??

You should ground yourself before touching any electronic components. If in doubt, ground yourself. Or get an antistatic wrist strap.

As long as you aren't accumulating more static charge you shouldn't have to keep grounding yourself. To be safe you could keep grounding yourself, or you could use anti-static equipment like jayb has mentioned above. I personally don't use a wrist strap and have never had a problem, but that's just me. Do what feels most comfortable for you.

If grounding yourself by touching the PSU casing, does it matter if the PSU is plugged into an outlet or not?

Some will say the power cord should be plugged in...some will say it doesn't have to be plugged in. When you touch the case you really aren't "grounding" yourself...what you're doing is "equalizing" the charge between you and the case.

if you frequently touch the case to discharge any static that you have picked up, you should be fine.

I suggest doing the build on an hard surface (like a wood table) with the table on a non-carpeted surface. that way, there is a low chance of building up any static.

Make sure you get some cardboard or something to protect the table if it's the dining room table...you don't want to scratch up the table.

best thing is to wash your hands
water is one of the best things to neutralize charge
it loves to take electrons
thats why you dont get static on moist days
wash your hands before you start (or even take a shower)
and then its always good to work on a table of some kind
and you are pretty much touching the case alot even if you dont notice so you shouldnt really ahve to worry about touching it on purpose to release charge
