building a gaming pc

HI

Im looking to build a gaming pc for around 800 bucks! I already have monitor and keyboard and moouse. So the things i need advice on are what motherboard, Cpu, Graphics card, Ram, Case, Power supply and whatever else i need i dont' know about. I dont' want a sound card because for right now ill just be satisfied with whatever comes with mother board. I also want to get something that will play high quality for atleast the next year. would also like to stick with newegg.com. Also was wondering about AMD and Intel because i know AMD is better but why are there processors in the 2-3ghz range when u can get a realalitively cheap Pent. 4 with over 3 ghz. Thanks if you could put the site link that would be helpful

if you are looking for a place to start the build in my signature minus the raptor was somewhere around 800

amd and intel really arent that far apart but most people seem to prefer amd for gaming
intel and amd make processors in different ways pentiums might have over 3.0clock speed but they dont have the fsb speed of an amd
different architecture but run at similar overall speeds

It would be great if you could include a budget/max budget. Also try visiting Anandtech, Hardocp, they have some newegg builds which I think might suit you.

If i wher u i would get a good amd procesor (4000+) cause they are cheaper and run at the same or faster speed than most intel's but thats you decition also u would like to stick with a good mother b cause thats the back bone of your system il recomend a (Asus A8N-SLI) get at least 2gb of corsair ram and the most important part of this rig is the video card since its a gaming il get a 6600gt but dont forget to get a good PSU with SLi support get a god CD/dvd rom and finally a good HD western digital/maxtor those are the most recomended brands.

might be a good build but its not in his budget
there is no way he can build it for around 800 when its 334 for a athlon 64 4000
122 for the asus sli board
150 for 2 gig ram
and around 150 for a 6600gt
total of 756

i would recommend getting the athlon 64 3700 saves 100 dollars 233
getting 1 gig of dual channel corsair for about 70
6600gt would be a good choice for graphics card at about 150
you can go with that asus board for 122
a good nec optical dvdrw from newegg is about 40
a 200 or 250 gig hard drive for 90-100
antec case and psu for about 90
total is about 805
assuming you have everything else (monitor keyboard mouse and operating system)
you could save money in a couple areas if you wanted
if you dont need sli which unless you are planning on adding another graphics card you wont you could get the msi neo4-f motherboard for about 80 dollars that would knock off 40
also you could go from the 3700 to the 3500 processor that would save 30

Drop that to regular Corsair Value Select - Save $50+
You can't use ATi cards in SLI, so drop the SLI board (besides you need a SLI certified power supply), get the ASUS A8N-E and save another $40. Take this savings and upgrade to the X800XL (~$275). I've got this card and it pretty well plays any game on max settings.

what they are saying is go with valueselect ram from corsair
its only like 80 dollars for a dual channel 2 x 512 pack
and it will run as well as the more expensive stuff
this will save you 60 dollars
plus you need a case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129148
something like that would work and it would come with a good quality power supply
that motherboard is a good motherboard and i highly recommend it

ati video cards are not compatible with sli only nvidia cards
so if you are not getting an sli card there is no point in getting an sli motherboard

Please don't type in all caps...it's hard to read and is considered shouting.

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

An OEM part isn't really meant to be sold to the end user (you), it's meant for system assemblers (like DELL or Gateway).

An OEM part is exactly the same physically as a retail part. The only difference is that it doesn't come in a box with a fancy manual, usually doesn't come with extra software (but does come with the necessary drivers on CD), will sometimes have a different warranty from the retail unit and is cheaper.

I don't think 350W power supply will be enough. Antec has some cases with 450W power supplies that might do the trick.

You want to get DDR400 RAM, that DDR333 will slow your computer down (DDR400 costs $10-$15 less).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440

You might also look at a LITE-ON DVD-Burners, they come with Nero burning software.

Honestly, I'd come down in the CPU a bit, and go up in the video card. Right now a 3800+ and a X800GTO are a bit out of balance. Maybe a 3500+ and a X800XL or a 6800GT?

You will need an operating system too, get the OEM version of windows XP unless you need some specific feature of XP Pro. The OEM version is about 100 bucks less than the retail version.
You might need a floppy drive to install drivers etc..

Agreed, I was thinking the exact same thing as I read that, then saw your response. I would either up the video card to a 7800 series or X1800 series with that CPU, or lower the CPU to a 3500+ and get a 7800GT or X850XT. That would balance better and lower the probability of system bottlenecks.

The X1800XL is a good counterpart to the 6800GT's, just to keep your options open.

once again, i recommend the 3700+ San Diego as the best possible buy per dollar. for $50 less you get a near equivalent processor. plus it overclocks well and at 2.5GHz the performance increase is awesome! i jumped 2000 in benchmarks using Hot CPU Tester Pro.

Well I didn't change the processor because I would like to upgrade later and I don't want to get a processor that might not have as much longevity. However, I did take your advice on the Ram and I upgraded the graphics card.
THe main thing i want to know is if these components are compatible and if this will be a good gaming pc for the latest games on high quality. I have exceeded my budget by 100 bucks, but with some xmas money I should be ok. Ok so here is what I have come up with,

XION Ultimate Engineering XON-001 Black SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450 Watt Power Supply (P4 & AMD Ready) Power Supply - Retail

MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

XFX PVT70GUDF7 Geforce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3800BPBOX - Retail

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model VS1GBKIT400 - Retail

Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA NCQ ST3120827AS 120GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM

SONY Black IDE DVD Burner Model DW-Q30A BK - OEM
