Exclamation Want to upgrade my computer this Christmas and I need your help

I have a really crappy computer right now and I want to upgrade it to a decent gaming pc.

Stats of my computer now:
Intel Celeron 4A, 2200 MHz (5.5 x 400)
Intel Brookdale-G i845GL Motherboard (Not sure what this means but i'm sure it sucks)
Intel 82845G Graphics controller (I know this blows and im looking in to a new one)
37 GB Internal Hardrive (Need more space)
384 MB of RAM (Need Alot More)
19 in CRT Monitor (Would like a flat screen)

Most of it is onboard stuff, which really sucks (I know)

As of right now I'm looking to put in a 250GB hardrive, a GB of RAM, and put in a Geforce 6600GT 128MB. I am wondering if this stuff is compatible or if I should put in a new motherboard, and if so, what stuff should I look for? What specific slot types should it have. Any help is appreciated.

Is that a home built computer or a name brand computer?

What I have now is a 2350 Dell Dimension. So it's not home built.

I recommend building a new one, the system already has both feet in the grave. Unless it isn't a prebuilt, then I doubt there is anything that can save that...What's your budget?

Only a few hundred. If i need to I could cut some corners and still use some of the parts from this one couldn't I?

Well you can keep the mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Maybe the Hard Drive as well. I think you should save up some money and just wait till you have sufficient funds to build a KA system.

I think that you are limited to pci cards on that machine, so your choice of video cards will be pretty small. I would suggest that you wait untill you save up enough to build a decent machine.
For a low end gaming rig you will need:
Case and decent power supply: At least $75
Motherboard: $100 range
Processor: $150 or up
Operating System: $100
Ram: $75-$100/GB
Video Card; $100 or up
Hard Drives; $100 or more
CD/DVD: $50 or so each
Monitor $250 -$300 will get you a fairly good one.
Keyboard/mouse: $30 or so

Would it be possible if I just replace the mobo, video card, and harddrive then? Instead of having to buy a completely new system, I could keep the case, power supply, and all the rest of that stuff.

Dell uses parts that can only be used with that same case. You won't be able to put in a new motherboard, and you can't re-use the power supply that came with it. I had to go through the same deal with my Dell dimension 2400.

Ok, then I'll start making building a new one. Is it ok if a mobo doesn't have any AGP slots? I know PCI is what is becoming more important, but should I need AGP for anything in the future?

No, you want a mobo that has PCI-Express x16. that's what all of the newer cards are being made for, so go with that.

i'll include a sample build real quick. Hold on.

The motherboard has a different socket number than the CPU, does that matter?

you got the wrong 3200+, look for the socket 939 3200+. Either that or you didn't get the right board. Here's a link to both.

Is it also possible to take the CD/CD burner drives from my old system and put them in my new one?

You could take the hard drive off of the old system. Not sure if you want to though...

you could get this vid. Card instead:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814142052

and you'll need a new version of windows XP.

I found a card that says 256MB of memory, but 128 is onboard, what's the difference?

I would not recommend that video card....at all. Like I said, just save up some money and get the system i posted later. I'm still waiting for my new system and it's been over 6 months. Just excercise patience until you have the money man. No rush, pc games aren't going anywhere.

The power supply in that case is probably not very good.

The problem with that video card is that it shares system memory. Try to find one of the non-hypermemory cards.

jay's right, that's not going to be a decent quality power supply in the case. Especially if you want to put in a better video card (either now or later) you'd have to replace it with something a bit more powerful.

I have a lot of cables hanging around in my basement, so that's not an issue. Can I take the OS from my old harddrive and just transfer it to my new one?

Would this be a better video card? http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130252

And what should I be looking for in a good power supply?
