XP install problem

Been trying to install XP Pro on a newly built system, after installing all the neccesary hardware files it just seems to freeze at 'Windows Setup...please wait'. well I waited for a half hour and nothing! I can't see any hardware issues, would it be a problem with the xp disk?

specs: P4 3.0EGhz, 800FSB, 1024DDR, AsusP4S800D-X, Western Digital 80G ide HDD, Panasonic 8xCD-RW.
I have the HDD set on Cable Select Primary.
and the CD drive as Cable select secondary.
The mobo has Sata, but I decided to go with an ide drive instead.

Actually no, its a copy, Im not even sure where the original is right now. Ive used the copy four or five times before on various computers without any problem.
Everyone I know has xp factory preinstalled with no CD disc, so I cant even borrow someone else's.

you really need to buy a new copy of xp, making a illegal copy of the cd is not allowed, and won't work.
you must have a different copy on each computer with its own key and activation

Windows Setup loads so far, then freezes at 27%. then I have to reboot and delete that partition and start again, format etc. I notice just as it freezes there is a clicking noise but Im not sure if its the CD drive or the HD making this.
Also I tried different jumper settings on the HD. I swiched from CS to single, since its the only drive on that cable.

Boot to the XP Home disk and do a fresh install. Delete the previous XP Pro partition and reformat before you install the Home edition.

How do I go about doing that? I can't get to the 'partitioning setup' part.
All I get at boot is ''NTLDR missing' with no more options other than restart.

Is it possible to put the New HD in my other computer (this xp system) as a slave, and then wipe it clean, or is there an easier way?

Maybe you've done this but here's the sequence. First, go into the bios on startup. Check/change the boot sequence so the CD drive is before the hdd. Put the XP CD in the cd drive. Save & exit the bios. Watch the monitor and when it says "Press any key to boot from CD" - do that, hit the space bar or any other key. Follow the prompts to do a new installation. When it finds an exising installation of XP do NOT do a repair, instead select new installation and Delete the existing partiton(s).

If you can't boot to the XP cd you may have a defective CD drive. You can format you hdd in another pc but you still have to get the one your fixing to boot to the XP cd.

I can't boot to the CD, thats my problem, it states 'NTLDR missing' error.
The previous install of XP Pro kept freezing at 27%, is that still on the HDD? and that XP Pro disc is now toast! which is why I bought XP Home Edition.

This is my second build, the 1st build went problem free, go figure!

Should I install the HDD in my other computer to wipe it clean and start fresh?

Sorry, didn't understand that you were working with an interrupted install. In that case you are better off to do as you suggest, wipe it in another pc.

I forgot to mention the interupted install, my mistake.
So in reformatting the HDD as a slave, I don't need the xp pro disc right? cause it no longer works. Will that clear the NTLDR error then?

It should clear the error. No need to use Slave jumpering tho. As long as you're using an 80 wire ide cable, just set both drives to cable select (CS) and put the drive to be repaired on the middle connector.

Have you tried using a boot disk and tesing if you have access and so forth to your drives(HDD, CD and Floppy of course)? IMO that would be the easiest way to wipe the disc and do a fresh install if you are having screwy compatibility problems.

Actually I just finished wiping the HDD and put it back in the new case. Im gonna have to wait til tomorrow to try the new install. Hopefully it will go smoothly. The new system will be 'Home Edition' whereas the one I use now is 'XP Pro' so I dont think I can make a bootdisk.

You can make just any type of bootdisk you need in spite of the OS that is on the PC you are on. www.bootdisk.com

When XP fails to load it is usually a Hardware issue.

Not enough Power
bad CDROM Drive
Memory
Motherboard
CPU
cables

If you have the computer plugged into the network unplug it. There are worms out there that will totally disable an older version of XP with no updates.

This sounds like a typical hardware error problem. XP can be very sensitive to bad hardware. Bad Ram is a typical problem try only one stick of RAM. A single large stick of RAM may cause a problem for XP on some motherboards (1 Gig). Try with on stick of RAM.

I got XP installed ok once I reformated the HDD, however, once in a while I get a 'CPU fan error' at start up although the speed and temp seem quite normal. (around 4000rpm/temp 38-42C. after an hour).
CPU: P4 3.0E 800FSB.
MOBO: Asus P4s800D-X

See if Disabling the Q-fan feature in the bios stops the warning. It should be under the Hardware monitoring section.
