Having some problems
Well monday I got my parts in and got it built with the help of a friend of course. Windows installing went fine and the instalation of drivers went okay. I ended up playing BF2 for 3 hours then shut off the computer and went to bed. Woke up the next morning and booted up the computer and it just sat at the Asus display and windows wouldnt boot. I rebooted it 5 times and hit del key so I could load up the mb tune controls and that took forever to load. I went to school came back and hit the start button and it booted up fine and went straight to windows. Just a second ago I was pluging in my joystick and I dono if its what caused it but it gave me a blue screen ( which I couldnt read it went away to fast) and my computer rebooted. It also takes quite a bit of time to load windows just about a minute.
My system is: AMD 4400 X2 Asus Deluxe SLI mobo Evga 7800 GT Audigy 2zs Windows XP Pro Any help will be appriciated!! Im getting paranoid because it just make me worry like something wrong with my pc. It works fine like right now the games run smooth and so on but it just gives me these problems so far. thanks, Tiir |

What brand power supply are you using? Is it a ATX 2.0 power supply with the 24 pin motherboard power connection? If you're running two video cards for SLI, is the power supply SLI certified?

Turn off reboot on error.
rightclick my computer Properties Advanced Startup and Recovery Settings uncheck automatically restart in the System failure box Hit Ok Next time it crashes the blue screen will stay up, copy down what it says and post that back here.

The case came with a Aspire 420 watt PSU. But I was told it wouldnt support what I had so I went ahead and got a Antec Trupower 2.0 SLi certified PSU 550watt and yes it has the 24 pin connector. I dont have dual video cards so I wouldnt think it would be the problem.
@Jay-I did what you told me too. Lets see if it will give me a blue screen again. CPU Temp at 36 MB temp at 43 thanks, Orlean |

That Antec should be fine, is the 4 pin power connector near the CPU plugged in, and if the video card has a power connector is that plugged in?
Those Temps are fine.

Alright it gave me the blue screen again. The blue screen of death. It said the following...
"A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage Run system diognastics Disable and newly installed hardware and drives disable any new software begginning dump of physical memory physical memory dump complete and it says something about checking my video card to make sure it hooked up right and that my memory might not be compatable. I have 2 sticks of 1 g ram - Mushkin 2gb high performane ram The 4 pin connector is connected I think, its the one above the PCI-E were my video card is. Also my heatsink is kinda on there crooked, very slightly I tried to straiten it out but I was afraid to damage the CPU or mess up the thermal paste...Would that case any problems ? hope that helps thanks, Tiir |

The heatsink could be the problem. If it isn't making good contact with the processor, it could be overheating and causing the crashes. I would take it off and reseat it.
You will need to clean off and reapply the thermal compound, or replace the thermal pad unless it is still in brandnew condition. One tip if the heatsink has connectors on each corner is to attach two opposite corners, then the other two.

Alright, but what if im running stable temps idle: 35 and underload at 40-43 ?
But if i were to do this what are the procedures of taking the old paste off. And the thermal paste is it okay to pick one up at my local circuit city or that product isnt good and should I order it off the internet ? Im just afraid of taking the heatsink off and damaging anything because im kinda new at this. I dont really know and do's and dont of it all yet. thanks, Tiir Last edited by Tiirshak; 12-09-2005 at 06:44 AM. |

Those are fine temps. I wouldn't worry about the heatsink.
I would try testing the memory with Memtest. www.memtest.org

Alright I downloaded it but the directions are not so clear to me on what to do. I have Nero Ultra Edition 7 and I burnt a image file but when I reboot and have the cd it goes straight to windows and wont boot from the cd...
Today I talked to my friend that helped me build my pc and he asked me if it said dumping memory and I said yes. He told me it might be the memory voltage setting and to set it at 2.8v. thanks, Tiir Last edited by Tiirshak; 12-09-2005 at 10:58 AM. |

Do you have a floppy drive, or one you could throw in this system? I find it easier to do diagnostics with a floppy drive.
Also, make sure you adjust the boot order like you did when installing Win XP. |

The floppy isnt hooked up I never got around to it lol. I was so eagar to play bf2 and it actually be smooth rather than hook up my floppy I never use.
I went into the settings nad changed it to boot frm CD and it didnt work. So I guess it would be a good time to hook up my floppy now. Tiir |

Good idea, there's a bootable floppy package, that comes with an installer. First you have to format the disk. In My Computer, right click the A drive, and choose format. Select Make Bootable MS-DOS floopy and format.

Those temps aren't bad, leave the heatsink alone for now. Try running memtest from the floppy and if you don't get any errors the next thing would be get the hard drive diagnostic off the manufacturers site and run that.

Alright I got the floppy hooked up and its working I also took the liberty of installing the supplement power adaptor for more power to the GPU.
Another question is what files do I download? there 2 sites both with different versions. Ones 3.2 and I have 4 files install, memtest, rawwrite and redme which ones do I transfer to the floppy along with the other dos files there ? |

What? you didn't have the additional PCI-E power connector plugged in? That might cause problems having it not plugged in.
Here's the floppy package: http://www.memtest.org/download/1.65....65.floppy.zip If I remember correctly, you need to make a bootable floppy, and then use the "install.bat" file in that package. EDIT: Quote:

I had my PSU PCI-E cable hooked up to it before(since my PSU is SLI certified) but my video card came with a splitter, the connector hooking up to the video card and it splits off to 2 4 pin connectors to run additional power to the video card.
But thanks for the information, lets see if it will work... thanks, Tiir |

Oh ok, I gotcha now. You don't need to use that splitter if you've got a PCI-E power cable. That's what those are there for.

I believe all you have to do is leave the floppy inserted turn off and restart the computer ...

Check in device manager to see if anything there is flagged with a yellow exclamation mark.
Did You try the Hard drive diagnostic.

Under device manager its all yellow question marks which includes: Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, Raid controller.
And yes I did a HD diognostic from the Seagate Site and no problems were found. But I just remembered that when we installed windows we did a quick format and instal instead of the one that took over an hour to do - could that be the problem ? thanks, Tiir |

You gotta install the chipset and device drivers off the motherboard CD.
