Mobo upgrade and System shuts off after 30 - 45 seconds.

Well I'm back....and with problems. I first posted here http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=146143 called Upgrade Son's computer.

I did not get any beeps, except when the system shuts off. I do get it to POST. It started to load windows but shut down before it loaded completely. I got into the bios but the system shutdown before I could change anything. It tried to load in safe mode once but shutdown before I could do anything.

The CPU, Chassis, and PSU fans are spinning. I tried to get it to see the XP Pro CD without any luck, and tried to get it to see the Mobo CD without any luck.

I'm at a loss as to what to do from this point.

Hi Cricket,

It is a new ASUS P5D1 motherboard, with an Intel P4 socket 775 3.2Ghz CPU I'm reusing from the HP system. It's in a new Antec Sonata II case that came with a 450w PSU that is ATX 2.0. I'm re-using the HDD that is a Maxtor 250gb SATA 7200rpm with XP Pro that is not the HP version but one we purchased when we formatted the HDD several months ago and was working fine on the HP system. I'm reusing 2 sticks of DDR 400 memory that came with the computer (256 ea), and 1 stick we bought to bring the system up to 1 gig (528 mb) the two sticks are placed in the dimm slot A1 and B1, the third stick is in slot A2 (this configuration worked before with the HP system) The POST saw the memory. The GPU is new it is a Sapphire X800GTO PCI-E X 16 card....there is no place on the card to plug in the PCI-E plug from the PSU and nowhere on the mobo for it. The monitor is the original flat panel from the HP system and we are re-using the keyboard and mouse too.

I'm re-using the DVD/CD burner and DVD/CD player, they are hooked to the IDE slot using the ribbon cable that said for CD-ROM I left the jumpers at cable select for both and the DVD/CD burner is at the end in the master position.

in the bios I noticed the system time and date are wrong but I am unable to change them before the system shuts off.

I did not do the out of case build because some of the harness lengths were too short to do it with.

Did you perform a WinXP Repair Install yet?

Although the RAM in the HP probably isn't proprietary, do you know if it's compatible with the new motherboard? I never reuse RAM from a name brand computer in one of my home builts.

No it won't stay on long enough to try it. I suspect the OS is causing the problem because when it tried to start in safe mode it said the there was a hardware change and it had shutdown to protect the data on the drive, however it shuts off before I even have the chance to load in safe mode, check the boot order etc. Can I unplug the HDD and get into the bios and make changes that way, shut down and plug in the HDD and try to boot from the the XP disk??

I have not checked the memory compatibility, I will remove the single stick in slot A2 and try and if it doesn't work put just the single stick in A1 if you think it would be worth while.

I did a search and read this post http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...t=system+shuts
system shuts off in BIOS His problem was RAID drivers, that makes me think the problem is with the HDD and the OS seeing the new mobo and having a fit. How can I get the bios to stay on long enough to see that the optical drive is a boot drive so I can do a Windows XP repair?

Do the out of case troubleshooter with just the core components first. If the computer can stay on with just those components then you can move on. But if the system still shuts down quickly then one of those components is causing the problem.

Okay, I'm a little farther than before, the system stays on now. The problem there was the heat sink was not oriented properly and not contacting the CPU fully. Now I get a beep which indicates no master drive detected. I was able to get the XP CD to go to setup but it said that there was no hard drive.

I'm confused now because in the BIOS the primary IDE is the DVD/burner (I unplugged the second optical drive from the slave plug for now) no primary slave.

The third IDE device is the Maxtor HDD (I plugged it into the SATA Master plug on the mobo) The HDD has two cables 1 - SATA cable, 2 - power plug. Am I missing something else?? Why won't it be recognized by windows. It shows in the BIOS??

Which SATA port do you have the SATA HDD plugged into? I just built a system with that motherboard and I had the Seagate SATA HDD plugged into SATA 1 (one of the red ports). I had the opticals plugged into the blue IDE port. WinXP Home installed without any problems.

Hi Cricket, I'm back...sorry I didn't reply earlier, we had to go to a viewing tonight. One of my wife's cousins passed away earlier this week.

Anyhow I have the optical on the primary IDE ribbon, at the end. The Maxtor is a SATA 150 and it is in one of the 4 SATA sockets. I put it in the one labeled master, or SATA 1. Should I simply have the bios load the defaults and try it again?

I finally got the HDD recognized. I made sure all the BIOS settings were at the default except I made the optical drive as the boot drive. I did a repair install of XP Pro. The original problem was with the heat sink (actually the guy installing it ) so we can let this thread die. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Don't blame yourself...the LGA775 heatsink installation isn't as easy as it seems. I had a hard time figuring it out the first time I used one too. And it's kinda scary seeing the motherboard bend so much when you're pushing down on the pins to get the heatsink installed. I kind of miss the old metal spring clip style heatsink hold down but I guess they don't put enough pressure on the heatsink for good contact with the CPU heatspreader.
