Boom I am about to boot the computer by foot

After completing a good many gaming system builds, a friend ask me to do an economical build to replace his system with blown caps. I don't know if he is much of a friend now.
I ordered a mach speed P4800M and a celeron D 340 processor at 2.93 Ghz ( socket 478)
Added Kingston ram DDr 3200 512 meg.
Used his old hard drive which works fine in my computer, his floppy and his cdrom tested out all prior to use. Added new 400 watt power supply.

When booted- no beeps, fans running on ps and on processor just no video-- Tried 2nd power supply with no change. Decided to pull all out of case and build on cardboard box. Removed all but chip, fan, and ram. OK cool thought bad on board video- returned board got a replacement- same problem.

Returned processor and got replacement- same problem. Still working on the out side of the case. Tried a 3rd power supply with no success.

So ordered an Asus P4V8X-MX board same problem. Went to Charlotte today and got a new Celeron D 325 processor with matched intel fan. Also, bought a new case. Built up-- same problem. Pulled all out of case and tried a 4th power supply- still not beeps, no video and all seems to be running.

I don't have any idea where to go from here- have tried 4 power supplies, 3 boards and 3 chips. My last idea was to try a different ram-- and I have tried Kingston, Corsair and Ultra. Please help.

I think I need to turn off the lights and get some sleep-- I hope to be enlightened when I read replies in the morning....

Thanks

Do you have the hard drive hooked up? Or any other drives hooked up?

The only thing I can think of is that CPU isn't compatible with the motherboard - at least the BIOS isn't up to date.

I forgot to mention that I checked all screw connections when I pulled the board to make sure there was no damage like hot spots.

Are you doing these tests IN the case or with the mobo out on the bench? Best to try it out of the case to eliminate a stray standoff causing mobo shorting to the case.

The mb home pages both list the processors as being compatiable. The manufacture date on the Asus is less than 2 months old. Their web site shows the bios in there is the most compatiable with the processor.

I have rechecked several times to be sure all is seated, and even examined the next to last process for damage.

I agree with that possibility. And the other obvious question, did you remember to plug in the 4 pin cpu aux power connector? (2 yellow and 2 black wires.)

Sounds like you've done all the right stuff. Maybe you're right, time for lights off and some sleep. This one may take some pondering.

I have to log off for a few hours- been up since 3 AM. I am just about to fall asleep on my key board. I will follow any suggestions short of purchasing an AMD chip and board-- Those are out of my friends budget and I can't give him something that expensive for Christmas-- I think he will have to be happy with the build if I ever get there.
Hope you all have a good evening and thanks in advance for helping.

The only other thing I noticed is that both motherboards use Via chipsets and you're using an Intel processor. While the manufacturers may say the cpu is compatible with these boards, most of us here at PC Mech tend to stay away from Intel on a Via board. That combo has a history of problems. Oh yeah, and I think the first mobo was a P4M800 instead of a P4800M, right?

I'll see if I can find an Intel suggestion for you.

Generally the processor might require a certain BIOS version (say v. 1010) which is relatively new, but the board might be shipping with an older version (say v.1008). You might try contacting tech support and see what version was shipped and what version you need. Sometimes they might ship you an updated BIOS chip to swap with.

Also, do you have an older Skt 478 CPU around? You could put in an older one that is compatible and boot with that, flash BIOS with the latest version and then put the new CPU back in.

Monitor works fine-- I just used it on a Dell system. In the off chance it was set up as a svga (had a DFI board come in that way) I hooked it to a different monitor. (The LCD I am using right now)

Tried different memory sticks of diffenent speeds as well as sizes and makes.

Yep Panama Red-- I was totally brain dead last night.

I don't have any older 478s around. I generally use AMD products until they priced themselves out of my ball park. I like building gaming systems with the 64 bit AMDs though.

Just went back through all connections again.............

Just stripped the board- no cpu, no mem no nothing--checked out with bare board, speaker and power supply-- no post codes. Probable bad board. Will try same with MachSpeed board and let you guys know.
What kind of luck would it be to have gotten 3 bad boards fron 2 different makers?

Also, tried several different power supplies just in case.

Why don't you ask tech support if the CPU is compatible with the shipped BIOS version? If not, they may ship you an updated BIOS chip.

Just a thought but since your stuck try checking the revision number on the board as it relates to the processor and its compatability. The board made need a revision upgrade. HTH
