Building a PC from old parts
Hello,
I'm trying to build a new PC from parts from two older PCs. The components I've added to create the PC are two hard drives and a CD drive. The PC previously had a different hard drive, so when installing, these are the only two present. They both contain old data, and were not formatted before being added to the new PC. Upon startup, I inserted my copy of XP Pro into the old CD drive, and waited for it to boot. All of the fans turn on, the power supply is running, the LEDs on the back of the case light up. I can't see anything on the monitor, but I hear a series of several beeps. How can I diagnose the error? |

If it helps, the PC is a Dell, and the beeps follow in this order (with pauses inbetween) - 5, 1, 2, 3.

I can't post the full, detailed specs. Neither of the PCs belong to me, so I don't know everything.
What I can tell you- One of the hard drives is a 40 GB Western Digital Caviar IDE, the other is a 40 GB Seagate ATA. The Western Digital is set (in position on the power cable) as master, and the other as slave. The processor is a 2.4 Ghz Pentium IV. The memory is 256 of RDRAM. The LED indicators on the back of the machine indicate that there is a memory problem, according to Dell's website. However, nothing about the RAM has been changed. It's in the same position, same amount, mounted to the same motherboard and using the same processor. |
