looping restart problems w/new build

We are in the process (all the entire day long!!!) of putting together a new system. We got it all together and the start screen comes up, memory is tested and passes then it reboots and it starts over and over again. It won't even let us into BIOS. We are leaning to a MOBO defect. HELP if you have any ideas. This is a DFI 875P MOBO with a 3.4 Intel Pentium Prescott processor, a hughgantic processor heatsink, 2, 1 gig each megs of ram a ATI radeon 9600 xt with a 550 watt power supply (new) and a new case. The hard drive is one I had but it has been formatted and is clean in order to do a clean install of everything. PLEASE HELP QUICK!!!! THANKS ((this isn't yelling, it is pleading!!!))

I posted this in the overclocking forum by accident, I am hopeing someone can help me here.

First suspect would be that the heatsink isn't securely attached.
Then a card not fully seated or a wire not fully connected.
4 pin power connector for the CPU, power connector to the video card if needed, 24 or 20 and 4 pin main power connector.
If none of that solves the problem you can try the out of case procedure in this thread to determine if one of the core components is the problem.

Does that heatsink have a 24 pin motherboard power connector or only a 20 pin?

Do you have the other 4 pin 12v power connector hooked up to the motherboard too?

Are you sure the Thermaltake heatsink is installed correctly?

CoolMax power supplies aren't very good and could be causing your problem. I'd replace it with a good quality ATX 2.0 power supply from either Antec, Enermax, Fortron Source, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, Sparkle Power or Zippy.

We followed the directions to build a system outside a case and it is still looping. He reseated the CPU and the thermaltake heatsink is three pin with a four pin connection on the MOBO. One pin is unused and left open. We do get a single beep, I thought that meant that your hardware was good.HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

Something we just discovered, any key struck on the keyboard makes the computer restart. Why is it that we never have "normal" problems!!!

Does this mean your problem is solved?

What type of keyboard is that ps/2 or usb. If it is usb and you have a ps/2 around try that one.

No, the problem is not solved! The hitting any key just means it makes it loop faster. We have the looping problem without any keyboard attached. But the one we had attached trying to get into BIOS was ps/2. We had another video card and it didn't solve the problem so it has to be the MOBO or the processor, we just used one of the 2 sticks of rams and then switched them to see it that helped, it didn't. I guess it is possible that both chips could be defective but probably unlikely. I guess I will call DFI (MOBO manufacturer) on Monday and if they think it is a bad MOBO, then it is off to newegg for a RMA.

One other thing to check would be whether the cmos jumper is on the right pins. Clearing it might help, and removing the battery for a few minutes then putting it back in might get it sorted out, or also could be a dead battery. The manual will tell you which pins etc..

Before you replace the motherboard you should test the system with another power supply. CoolMax is not a good brand. Poor quality, weak or faulty power supplies will cause random reboots. I would try another power supply before I replaced the motherboard.

OK, we have checked everything, the power supply is great, battery is fine etc. BUT we found that if you pull the CMOS jumper and put it in thed clear mode it stops the loop but once you hit the delete key (or any other key) on the keyboard it restarts the computer and goes back into the infinite looping. What now??

How do you know the power supply is fine?

first of all it is new and not a cheap one and it has great reviews on newegg. plus My Husband (the engineer) checked it with his meter.

Well...as Cricket said, it's not a very good brand. Even though it's a more expensive one it is on our bad list:
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

And those on the bad list have been know to come dead (or defective) on arrival (DOA). Also the meter he used probably doesn't test it under a load...so the power supply may be failing under a load.

Hold it...I just thought of something. I recall reading on newegg reviews that board's BIOS version wasn't compatible with the newest CPUs. Is this P4 a 550 or a 650 CPU? Some people were saying that they had to give DFI a holler and have them ship them an updated BIOS chip to swap out.

it is a 650 and since we discovered the CMOS jumper switching will stop looping we figured it is a MOBO issue and I am calling DFI tomorrow. Thanks. I hate to think I have to eat a $105.00 power supply I doubt newegg will RMA it for no real reason.

Ah ha.

The first problem was the BIOS, it came stock without supporting 64-bit, so I had to call DFI directly and they sent me an updated BIOS which was easy to install.
I'd give DFI a holler and have them send you an updated BIOS chip to swap out. (There's a couple more reviews like that)

I think you'll be OK with the power supply.

went back to newegg and reread the reviews, it sounds like DFI will need to send me a new bios chip and I will be great. Still undecided about what to do about the Power supply

For the price it seems like it should be a good one.

A new updated bios chip fixed the problem!!! In the mean time we decided to upgrade (again) to 4 gigs of ram, an extra 200 gig harddrive and to put a bigger fan in the rear of the case. She is a screamer!!!!!! I built her for photoshop with overkill! LOL
