Looking to upgrade pc
Hi all,
Looking for some recommendations on upgrading my motherboard and processor. Here are my current specs: Motherboard ASUS A7N8X Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail Processor AMD Athlon XP 3000+ Barton 400MHz FSB Socket A Processor Model AXDA3000DKV4E - OEM I went into my local Best Buy (Geek Squad) and asked about upgrading these two. Their response was that "Socket A" is outdated and that I'd be better off upgrading my motherboard and processor at the same time. My budget is up to $800. Here are some additional specs on my pc: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 6Y080M0 80GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive SAMSUNG Beige IDE CD Burner Model SW-252FEN Thermaltake VOLCANO 11+ 80mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan/Heatsink for AMD Antec 75000 80mm Sleeve Case Cooling Fan (2 of these) Antec Life Style SONATA Piano Black 0.8mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case TruePower 380Watt ATX12V Power Supply mushkin SP3200 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model 991093 (3 of these for 1.5G RAM) eVGA 256-A8-N344-AX Geforce 6800GT 256MB GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card Any suggestions on what processor and motherboard to purchase? 2 other things about me: (1) I typically buy off newegg and (2) I'm a huge Battlefield 2 player so I'm looking for the best performance I can get within my budget above. Thank you! Dijonace |

If you upgrade the motherboard and CPU to a Athlon 64 setup you're also going to have to replace the AGP video card with a PCI-Express 16 video card and replace the current ATX 1.1 power supply with a ATX 2.0 power supply with the 24 pin motherboard power connector.
I haven't built a AMD based computer in awhile so I can't help you with the specs. Cricket

I would upgrade your ram....to 1gig (2 x's 512)
Just for gaming you aren't going to notice much if any difference when playing a game going to the next platforms...socket 754 or 939....your rig is still a good performer at 32bit extensions and you have the best agp card you can get.... your rig is still very respectable the only thing I see would be more ram.... If you still want to upgrade...you will need a socket 754 board to use your existing AGP card or a socket 939 to go PCI-E... If I was going to sink the money I would go 939 myself...but ...you will need a 939 board, cpu, new 2.0 atx psu, pci-e video card... you can do all that well withing your budget...If you like the Asus board...stick with that...right now the 3700 A64 (939) cpu is your best bet....then from there it's a 7800gtx video card if you want the best...get a good SLI approved PSU that way you know you got a good one for future upgrades.... I would still opt for 1-2gig of ram... Personally I would just throw another stick in the rig you have and save the money...Socket A is outdated but still a good performer...

Thank u all for replying. I guess I could stick it out for a while with this pc and that my next "upgrade" would probably be a whole other unit.
Again thanks for the honest replies on this board. Dijonace |
