Motherboard/CPU package

Tigerdirect's having some rebates on mobo/cpu packages. I'm looking for a mobo with an AGP slot and not PCI:

$240 Chaintech SK8T800 Socket 754/Athlon Sempron 3700

$200 ABIT K8U Socket 754/Athlon Sempron 3700

or should I shell out a little more and go to a Socket 939/Athlon Venice 3200?

I would highly recommend going with the 939 socket, its the newer tsocket of the two.

BTW, its that Athlon Venice a 64-bit chip? or is it XP?

From what I understand, the 754 socket is old technology and is slowly phasing out (just like AGP with PCI-E).

There are a few socket 939 boards with both PCI-E and AGP that would let you use your old AGP card, then upgrade to a PCI-E card followed by a new motherboard when the budget allows it.

Thanks for suggestions. The question is when are these processors and PCI-e going to become obsolete? I give them 4 years at the most. It seems that's when all hardware (and software) technologies seem to cycle. (ie. It seems like Windows 95 just came out yesterday.)

I have a feeling PCI-E is going to be around for a long time, just like AGP.

However, new sockets are coming out continuously, it's just the way it is. AMD plans to release its M2 socket next year which will make the almost new 939 sockets dirt cheap.

But if you were going to pick between the 754 and 939, why pick older technology? the 939 socket seems like the best choice.
