Problem freeze up with build

My friend at work was having problems with his old pc and thought the MB was bad. He decided to build new pc and bought.

Mach Speed Matrix P4M800 Via Socket 478 Micro ATX MB with Intel Celeron D
ATX Mid-Tower Case with an Ultra 350 Watt V-Series PS
Cantech Keyboard and Optical Mouse
Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz CL3 Memory
Intel Genuine Socket 478 Cooling Fan

Used his old HD, and drives and Windows xp.

When he tries to load a any CD like for MB or OS the pc starts loading normaly and then shortly after a minute it Freeze's up. Will do this Repeatively.

He thought that perhaps that there was something bad on his HD and purchased a new Seagate 120GB Barracuda ultra ata/100 8mb cache.

Same problem still persists. I didn't have any clue other than he said processor instructions didn't tell him to apply thermal grease and he didn't. Any ideas of what would cause it to freeze up. Bad MB, OS, virus or worm, etc.?

Can he do anything else? Will the computer stay running idle? Or just when trying to read a CD? If the latter, might want to have him swap IDE cables.

Did change IDE cable not optical

He did change IDE cable but he never attempted to let sit idle. Will try that this P.M. and watch temps on bios. Will post tommorow results. Has not tried a different optical drive, but when he had old HD in he tried a floppy with same freeze results. Will try to find him another optical device just incase.

PC will idle

Started pc into bios watched temps, shutdown temperature disabled, operating at 73c, cpu fan 2636rpm. Idled in bios all night long. Installed an old cd drive but it didn't even light up. Probably bad. Will get and try a known good drive tonight.

73C!?! That's way too hot! Make sure the heatsink is installed correctly and make sure the plastic cradle around the socket isn't broken or cracked.

You are correct Sir!

I had him check heat sink and he found it was not properly seated. This appears to have resolved all the problems for now. Temp went down to normal and does not freeze up anymore. Thanks to everyone for the help!
