FOR PC BUILDERS!!! Distributing Windows XP???
Greetings Ya'll & Happy Holidays!
Okay, I have a question for all the system builders out there! I'm interested in starting a custom PC business and was wondering if any of you could tell me how I go about getting a license to distribute WinXP in my new builds? Thanks! |

At my work (Which is an IT department), we pretty much use the regular XP licenses, one CD per new build. Microsoft may have a multi license pack for stuff like that, but im not sure.

What you are looking to do is exctly what the OEM versions of windows are for, and since I would assume you would want to provide your customer with the windows installation disk, you have to purchase a copy for each PC you build and load with Win XP. The only thing I would check into is to see if you can find a discount for buying bulk quantities..

Don't expect to make any money from just building custom computers because you won't. The real money comes from service, repair and maintenance.

I concur with cricket because you just can not compete in the lower and middle range PC market. By the time you buy all the parts, and spend your time assembling and loading the PC, you'll have as much or probably more invested in it as you could reasonably charge compared to what they could get from Dell, but as long as you understand this going in, and you begin to establish a customer base, than you can pick up the service and repair work. It's going to take time to establish yourself, and your reputation..

Another thing to be aware of...reputation is everything in this kind of business. Be sure to treat your customers right and to always be honest with them. Nothing brings down a small business like thinking you're important to your customers instead of thinking your customers are important to you. You need your customers...your customers can always go somewhere else for business.
