First Build: $2K AMD Gaming PC
Hello! I've been tinkering with computers when I was about 8 years old and now I am begining to build my first rig. Here are the parts I have purchased:
All items purchased at Micro Center XION Black XION II XON-101 Computer Case With Side Panel Window http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811208005 AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103562 ASUS A8N-SLI ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131524 BFG Tech Geforce 7800GT Video Card (NO CoD2) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814143042 Ultra Products Second Generation 500W X-Finity PSU http://www.bigbruin.com/reviews05/ul...dex.php?file=1 Revolution 5.1 Sound Card http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_u...on51-main.html GeIL Value 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820144310 Pioneer Black IDE DVD Burner http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827129169 Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB 3.5" SATA 300MB/s Hard Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144415 I attempted to begin to build the rig last night. After making the newbie mistake of installing everything without testing, I learned that my ASUS board wasn't working. I turned the power on and the case lit up, but the motherboard refused to boot: no beeps, picture, anything, just the green LED. The monitor attempted to search for a signal, but could not find one. Luckily, I was able to exchange the old ASUS board for a new one (the same exact model), but I won't be able to get it untill Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest. I am asking for advice on how to reapply the thremal solution on to the heatsink, which got cleaned off when I took out the processor, and just some general advice for a newbie. Thanks in advance! Did you do a out of case build last night as per these instructions?
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 You may not have had a defecitve motherboard if you didn't do that. Anyhow, before you put everything in the case in a few days, make sure you follow those instructions first.

I'll do that first when I get my new board. Thanks for the reminder. Kitsune87 |

Also something to consider:
That PSU is made by Ultra, so if you ever plan on using that SLI feature on your motherboard, then that power supply will not do. You need one that is SLI-Aprroved. A list can be found at www.slizone.com |

I reset the CMOS on the board and it turns out this SLI board doesn't POST like other boards do. After re-reading the manual, I pluged the speakers into the MOBO sound jack and turned on the PC. A female voice said "No CPU Installed" which is expected because I took out the AMD. Now that I am getting POSTs I sould be able to figure out what is wrong. Interestingly enough, I still can't get a display. I'll worry about that later. I'm going to install the CPU tonight and work down the list. I'll let you know how it goes. Just a recomendation for your next build, but you should have shopped at newegg.com. I looked at the stuff u bought at that website, all i can say is overpriced.

The chipset fan on that motherboard is not reliable. Try the A8N- SLI Premium instead.

Yikes it's been awhile.
Well my first build is a success! My compy is running smoothly and I just finished transfering files and getting her up to normaility. HL2: Lost Coast's stress test shows an avrage FPS of 82.3. I am also able to max out F.E.A.R, Doom 3, and Battlefield 2. I can't be happier with the outcome of this build. Turns out the problem with the mobo not POSTing was the keyboard was not connecting. You will not get a screen with this board without a sucessfull POST. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me in this task. You are a great group of guys. Kitsune87 |

so the mobo was the culprit after all.
