Okay so 2day i went to tiger direct. Got my self a 500w PSU and one problem. After everything was already build i came accross noticing that the main power connecter was a 20 when i need 24. Is there any solution besides havign to buy a new PSU.? PLZ ... is there a converter or such a device. So thanks in advance.

Humm from what i know i dont think so. Double check and make sure u dont got a 20 + 4 power connecter. That means u got a 20 pin connecter and then another extra +4 in case u need a 24 pin.

Converters do exist, yes.

However, there's a reason your motherboard needs 24 pins, so plugging in a 20 pin power supply is a bad idea. Im afraid the only sensible option is to return the power supply and choose another.

While you're at it, get yourself a quality unit, and dont be tempted by units that show high wattage but are actually from shoddy manufacturers.

For info, see the stickied thread at the top of the General Hardware forum. It highlights the quality manufacturers you should choose from.

From the same place you got the power supply, most likely.

But I can't stress enough how important it is to get the proper power supply (that means a good brand, and not one that costs $25).

Also why are converters bad?.My PSU was $80.. just dont want to go to tigerdirect agn...1hr away from home. Don't want to go return it. plus everything is connected. so guess ima just get a converter. If any problems are presented than il buy a new PSU.

I believe the 20 to 24 pin connector will supply the power needed to the extra 4 pins. HOWEVER, They are NOT recommended for generic, low quality, or low wattage power supplies.
My best advice would be to return the 20 pin PSU to Tiger Direct and get a good quality 24 pin PSU.
Better to make the trip then to chance destroying your MOBO.

As already said, you can use a 20 pin on a 24 board, by way of the converter.

Although Ultra aren't the best brand of PSUs, they aren't the worst, and depending on your hardware, you may be able to get away with using the converter.

Please post the full hardware specs of the computer this will be used in, then we can advise more.

The fact that you bought an AMD 64 suggest that you want to be gaming, so you'll probably want a windows XP installation for this.

However, there's nothing wrong with having a separate linux partition on the system if you're curious and want to learn - that's exactly how I got into using the OS.

Saying that, if you're already linux-savvy then the choice is entirely up to you.
