ok dumb question, does IDE cable length matter?
Going to get round cables for my rig but I heard if they are too long it slows down the speed. Any truth to this?? Looking at 10" floppy..18" or 24" on HD and ROMS
These will be going an a P4P800SE

What would affect speed much more than cable length is the installation of two drives on one cable. If you're using SATA hard drives, and have two optical drives, consider installing them on different IDE cables for optimum speed.

The official maximum length for IDE cables is 18 inches. Don't go longer than 24 inches on the IDE cables. Longer than that and you run the risk of data corruption because of "cross-talk" interference between the wires.

Just wondering, but is there anywhere that you can get them made smaller? I mean like custom cut to the exact length... I will do a little searching around, but I wouldn't mind having some specially cut cables which are the exact length needed ( plus a few centimiters to be safe ).
And like weremonkey said, the longer the wire the more time it will take but that is so minimal you probably wont notice it.

I wondered that myself Ryan....
Seems like even the 18"ers are about 8" to long....

Custom sized cables would increase of the cost of them. What's wrong with a couple inches of extra cable?

Hehe, neat. Those are only 40 conductor cables though.

I don't think they make 80 wire IDE cable kits but the 40 wire kits will be fine for optical drives. And most people buy SATA hard drives for new computers now anyway.

Good point. It'd be pretty difficult to get an 80 conductor cable to work like that in a kit...it'd be like trying to build your own CPU (and not take up a room), well not that extreme, but you get the point. |

Ryan....
I have actually ordered the double-ended round cables for hooking 2 drives on one channel and cut off the master part right at the slave connector (because I run 1 drive per channel) and used these because they were shorter that way....worked for me...
