black screen 1 long beep

My pride and joy $1,500 new build has been refusing to completely shut down lately, but otherwise was working fine.

Then I turned it on and all I got was a black screen and a long beep.
Can’t find a Bios beep code like that.

It's on, the fans spin and the light glows.

I pulled it all apart looking for a loose cable
(I got the black screen once before when my SATA cable came loose)
I couldn't find anything wrong.
Made sure all the connections were good.
Tried another monitor. I don’t have a spare PCI-e.

I haven't moded or overclocked anything. The rig is stock set.

I did add the upgraded video card fan, but that was a couple weeks ago and it worked great after that.

Is it just one long continuous beep (tone) or one long beep...pause...one long beep...pause...?

Have you stripped it down to just the core components out of the case yet?

Attach th mobo with the cpu(fan), ram, and video card only to see if it does the same. if so try removing some ram to see if thats the problem. if it still dosent work, remove the mobo from the case and do a bench test

re-edited: if its a continous beep (it beeps and pause and beeps again), that could be the sign of bad ram, or miss place ram. could also be the video card

I usually associate one long beep with a video issue and as you have a blank screen it seems a fair assumption.
Did you refit the video card properly after changing the fan?, has the card worked loose through being ill fitted?, did the new fan work ok or have you cooked the video card?.

It is one long....not continuous tone about a couple seconds long, with no pause tone.

I disconnected everything but the MB / CPU / Memory / fans / video card / HD.
No change. Have not pulled MB from the case.
I am just a guy with a screwdriver, so I wouldn't know where to begin bench testing it.

I did find one reference to 1 long beep code:
"Award Bios BEEP Codes:

• 1 Long Beep: Memory problem
Explanation: There is a failure of some sort related to the system memory.
Diagnosis: The first bank of memory probably has a failure of some sort; this is usually just a physical problem such as an incorrectly inserted module, but may also mean a bad memory chip in a module. It is possible that there is a failure related to the motherboard or a system device as well."

I pulled the ram, reconfigured it with 1 stick then 2, switching it around to check for a bad stick, but no joy.
I have seated and reseated the video card many time now. I think it was a fairly straight forward fan exchange procedure, and believe I did a good job.
It has been working fine now since then (2-3 weeks now fine)

I haven't cooked it that I can see. No carbon, no smell.
The CPU ran at about 35C most of the time.
Been too busy on my other builds to even game with this beauty yet.

A couple weeks back I ran some tests on my X800got2 to see how modable it might be.
It got about a 4600 3Dmark score, which I believe is average for this card (unmoded)
I ran the ATI OC program to see what it would do, and it ran without artifacts way above stock settings. I reset to defaults after the tests.

I need to isolate the problem to the MB PSU RAM or video card before I go out an buy more parts guessing. This is my only PCIe build, so I don't have another PCIe Vidcard or another PSU with a 6 pin vidcard plug. (But I'll check)

Pull the motherboard from the case and then follow the instructions found here.

Ok cricket, that's probabley what I need to do.
But one last thought.

I don't have diagnostic LEDS in my Asus build, but in this one I do (MSI)
(I am sooooooooooooooooo glad I built me another)

They are both AWARD bios. (I think V 1005 in the problem Asus build)
Do you think the MSI USB diagnostic USB LED might cross over to this Asus motherboard and tell me anything worthwhile?

I doubt if it would work. That is probably a MSI specific function that is hardware based and the ASUS board most likely wouldn't have the same components to use it with.

I found my Rosewill 500W from my MSI build came with a 4 pin / 6pin molex add on.
I tried it with the Asus MB laying on the MB box the basics and X800GTOO2 attached.

Still a black screen, but I don't recall hearing the long beep.

I put the 2GB of XMS RAM / 3700+ / Antec 480W in the Centurian case with the MSI K8N-NEO2 and it runs great at 29C.

I'll have to take the graphics board to a shop to see if it's bad.
Will the manufacturer give me a hard time because I put the artic silencer 5 fan on it?

Doing so has most likely voided the warranty.
