splat No Beep & No Bios POST

Hi,

First of all, I'm new to this forum and want to wish you all a happy holiday season.

Now down to business. I'm building a new PC and as my topic title states, I'm not getting any beeps or a BIOS P.O.S.T message. You see, this was the same problem I was having with my old system and thus the reason why I'm ugrading. I say "upgrading" because it's not a completely new build since I have kept the case/power supply from the old system.

After buying and installing a new ASUS motherboard, CPU, and memory, I'm still not getting any beeps or bios p.o.s.t. Since the only hardware still in use from the old system is the power supply, is it safe to assume that the power supply is causing the no beeps, no bios post problem? Initially, I never suspected the power supply to be the problem since I am getting power to the cpu fan and the cd-rom tray opens and closes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Peter

Yep, read and followed all that yesterday. I'm leaning towards the power supply being the problem since it's the only hardware remaining from the old system. Old system had the same symptoms as the new build.

What I'd love to know is, can a power supply properly power the cpu fan, cd-rom tray, power switch, etc.. and still cause the problem I described above?

Yes because PSU's run several power rails hence all the different colour wires, it's quite possible that only one or two rails ave gone bad and by the sound of it the supply to the mother board is faulty in some way. Good PSU's are not expensive these days so a new one is definately in order in this case.
Did you actually carryout the out of case rebuild?

Yes I did. Placed the MB on the cardboard box and everything.

One final odd tidbit. I mentioned that the Cd-Rom tray opens and closes. However, when I plug the IDE cable into the motherboard the cd tray no longer opens. Very odd.

That is quite possibly something to do with the IDE controller, which as you know is on the motherboard, I think the time has come for a new PSU.

By the way, the CD-Rom/ IDE problem is also occuring on the old motherbaord. More reason to believe this is a PSU issue.

Any good PSU you can recommend? What price range are we talking about?

There is enough information in this thread to keep you busy for an hour or two. There is nothing worse than spending good money on components just for some cheapo PSU to turn it all into melted cheese the first time there is a minor power spike, personally I like Antec PSU's for stability, reliability and all round value for money.

What are the specs? We need to know what motherboard you're going to use and all the other parts you plan to use.

This is the motherboard I just purchased, http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l...84&modelmenu=1

I noticed that Asus was not on your recommended power supply list. Anyone know much about Asus PSUs. Are they reliable?

Here's a good power supply that will work with that motherboard.

Thanks for the link Cricket. Unfortunately, I'm in Canada and they don't appear to ship outside the U.S.
