Several problems
Okay, I've just finished assembling my new comp and when I turn it on all the fans start up and the lights come on but...
1. the dvd drives won't open, the LEDs blink on and off. There are 3 slots I left empty because I don't have cables for them, are they necessary? 2. nothing shows up on the monitor at all. I've tried my CRT and LCD, neither respond. 3. This is the motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128250 it seems that LAN is built in or do I still need a LAN card (Cable internet) and a sound card? 4. It also 'ticks' Last edited by chompison; 12-21-2005 at 10:08 PM. |

First off, list the full specs of this computer by brand and model.
Try this: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 You must take the motherboard out of the case; you are trying to see if the motherboard is shorting out with the case. 1) What 3 slots? Slots for external drives? PCI slots? Either way, no, you don't need everything filled. 2) Try what I posted above. You've eliminated a bad monitor. 3) No need for a network card. Your board has onboard networking. No need for a sound card, there's onboar sound.

You set the motherboard on an anti-static bag? What anti-static surface? If it's something like the bag it comes in, the bag conducts electricity, just like the case. You should just set it on the box it came in.

No no, I set the mobo on the box it came in. I already know not to put it on antistatic bags.
Since last night, I've tried it with only mobo ram & video card and the monitor still doesn't work. Last edited by chompison; 12-23-2005 at 01:22 AM. |

If you can't get the core components to POST and put an image on your monitor, one of them is defective...or you didn't plug in all the power connections on the motherboard. Did you plug in both motherboard power connections?
Do you have another compatible power supply you can swap in to test with? Specs from chompison's text file: POWER SUPPLY - Logisys PS500AC 500 Watt CPU - Intel Pentium4 3 0GHZ MOTHERBOARD - Gigabyte GA-8I915P DUO LGA 775 MEMORY - Kingston HyperX 1GB (2 x 512mb) HARD DRIVE - Seagate 300GB Barracuda HARD DRIVE - Hitachi 400GB Deskstar VIDEO CARD - ATI ATI RADEON 256MB GDDR3 DVD-BURNER - LG GSA-4167B DVD Writer (two of them) FLOPPY DRIVE - Mitsumi FA404M-BK 7 in 1 Floppy/Media Cricket

Yes, both mobo connectors are in. I don't have another PSU, but I'm thinking of trying each part in my other -older- computer (hopefully its compatible).
And, as I said before, the DVD drives won't open either, so I doubt that THREE parts are defective. Unless it's the mobo that's bad.... |

Disconnect the IDE cables from the optical drives and see if they'll open.
Make sure the drives are jumpered properly for the type of IDE cable you're using. If it's a 40 wire IDE cable the jumpers should be set to master or slave. If it's a 80 wire IDE cable the jumpers should both be set to CS (cable select) and the cable installed blue to motherboard, black to the optical you want master and grey to the optical you want slave. You mentioned the computer "ticks"...did you find out what was making that noise? Was a wire hitting a fan blade? If not, try running the computer in the dard and see if you see any electrical arcing. Cricket

I've set the jumpers to CS for the 80 wire cables, (only) after disconnecting the IDE cables, both DVD drives can be opened.
The ticking is coming from the mobo speaker. It sounds just like a clock. |
