Loading Times

Well my computer is up and running pretty good, just one slight problem. The loading times for XP are horrible. It's been over 15 minutes since I turned it on and it's still loading windows.

Also one more question. Is there a way where I can chnage it so the BIOS screen doesn't show up during boot?

Post the complete system specs for this computer. List the parts by brand and model.

How many background programs are you running on your computer? What are they? Do you have a lot of fonts installed on your computer?

Depending on the motherboard used you may be able to go into the BIOS and enable a splash screen to hide the POST screens.

Well i just got a disc boot failure, I wasn't running many programs. the computer is barely 5 days old so i was loading the programs I needed and such.

Seems that i have to load XP onto my computer again(for the 4th time). Could there be something wrong with my hardrive?

EDIT: also the mobo i'm using is the asus a8n-sli.

Get the diagnostic utility for your hard drive and test it. It probably has bad sectors already.

From the hard drive manufacture's website.

This is starting to get annoying. I re-installed XP, loaded up drivers and stuff and attempted to get on the internet, well my computer didn't recognize my wireless card so I figured I would re insert it. When I went to start my computer back up, it doesn't boot into windows, but instead shows a message saying "coud not boot into windows because some file is missing or corrupted. insert windows cd and press r to repair"

When I do that it says that it can't find any hard drives so it forces me to re-install it. What is up with this thing?

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download the diagnostic utility and test that hard drive with it. It sounds like it's got bad clusters in the boot sector. I think you're looking at RMA'ing that hard drive back to the vendor or manufacturer.

Use the one you are on now. Usually there's a bootable version you put on a floppy. I don't think they will RMA it without results from the diagnostic tests.

Nevermind, after closer reading I realized it does support SATA.

Where did you buy the hard drive from? Try contacting them.

I went through similar problems last June building my new computer. I have the ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe MB and a Maxtor DiamondMax10 SATA hard drive.

In case you haven't done this during your XP install, you need to go to the Maxtor website and download the SATA controller drivers onto a floppy (hopefully you have a floppy drive in your new setup -if not perhaps you could use a CD)
When you begin the XP setup, you will get a screen that asks if you need to install third party controllers and you should say yes and use the Maxtor controllers. The XP controllers left me with the OS not recognizing the hard drive. It took me several re-installs to get this figured out.

It would also be a good idea to download the latest BIOS version for the MB from ASUS and update that from the very beginning.

I hope this helps.

I'm using the 200GB version of your drive, could you direct me to which drivers you downloaded? I tried Maxblast 4 and it wasn't recognized in my floppy drive when prompted for the controllers.

I will go to the Maxtor website to refresh my memory.
I'm pretty sure that if you have the correct Maxblast, then you should be able to make a bootable floppy from it. This is what you need to have on hand during your OS install.

(It will be worth it when you get this computer up and running. I love mine.)

Do you have a spare hard drive you can install temporarily just to see if you can install and run Windows? If a different hard drive loads and run Windows fine, your original hard drive is no good.

I remeber that same problem mentioned before here...Seems like there is a special driver needed to correct the problem...do a search in here or in the motherboard section...

Well i got the floppy mess sorted out, seemed as if the write protection window was closed. I used Maxblast to format ad partition the hard drive and now i'm re-installing the OS. Hopefully this works.

Ok, same thing happened with the corrupted file in windows. I ran the diagnostic for the hard drive last night and it's still testing it, shoudl it take over 12 hours to do a diagnostic on a 200GB hard drive?

Do you have another hard drive you can swap in to temporarily install Windows on?

I think your hard drive is defective. It shouldn't take that long to run the diagnostics. I recently ran diagnostics on a 200GB Seagate HDD and it took about an hour to complete.
