$1200 AMD Gaming System?

I'm trying to lay out the plans for a new gaming system that will serve me for several years. So far I have:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103497
$379.00 - AMD Athlon 64 4000+ ClawHammer 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA4000ASBOX - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145450
$106.00 - CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model TWINX1024-3200C2PT - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130247
$304.00 - eVGA 256-P2-N515-AX Geforce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Desktop PC - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131540
$163.00 - ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144013
$120.00 - Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6V250F0 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106990
$37.99 - LITE-ON Beige IDE DVD Burner Model SOHW-1693S Beige OEM - OEM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837102059
$93.95 - Microsoft Windows XP Home With SP2 - OEM

I already have the monitor, mouse, keyboard, and speakers (two Monsoon satellites with subwoofer). I also have absolutely no idea what sound card to use yet, or if I even need one; input would be appreciated. I was aiming for a system between $1000-$1500.

This is my first build. Are these components all compatible so far? Is there anywhere I can improve? Will cooling be an issue? The goal is a machine to render the latest games as fast and as beautifully as possible for the next two years. The last game I bought was Half Life (original..), and I have some catching up to do.

Just use the on board sound. That is sufficant for most people. If you want one that will last sevral years try a duel core processor. Future games (in a few years) will take advantage of the duel core,

What's the point of the PCI Network Adapter?

Also, I haven't heard of that case/PSU manufacturer. I'm not saying they're bad, but personally I would buy a separate PSU from a well-known manufacturer, one that is known to be ATX 2.0 so it has the 24-pin mobo connector and the 4-pin PCI-E connector.

Power supply is questionable (ATX PS/2, PS/2 Redundant) SLI motherboard will need a power supply from this list.
You are likely to need a floppy drive during the setup to load drivers, sata controllers etc.
RAM: You only need the XMS if you are going to overclock it.

the san diego core athlon 64 4000+ is $334 (versus the older clawhammer you've picked out for $379).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103529

Is there a specific reason why u want this core? i don't game (yet) so maybe its a gaming thing? unless there is a reason, save yourself $40 and get the newer san diego core, as it supports SSE3 extensions, and is based on a 90 nm process = runs slightly cooler.

I've removed the parts in question, and have added:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129145
Antec SUPER LANBOY Silver anodized aluminum ATX Mini Tower Computer Case - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103931
Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory Model VS1GBKIT400 - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103529
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA4000BNBOX - Retail

That power supply wasn't on http://www.slizone.com/object/slizon..._powersupplies, but it still claims to be nVidia SLI Certified. As for the floppy drive comment, I can borrow a drive from another computer just for the driver installations.

Will I need anything like thermal paste to install the processor or aftermarket coolers for the gpu/cpu? I currently don't plan to overclock anything.

Also, the difference between the eVGA 256-P2-N518 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130238) and the eVGA 256-P2-N515-AX (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130247) appears to only be the driver disc, which I assume could just as easily be downloaded? Is the eVGA n518 model worth the extra $40 for this, or am I missing something?

I appreciate ya'll putting up with my questions, thanks!

you don't "need" anything else. you may choose to incorporate more cooling, but what you have is sufficient, especially since you won't be oc'ing

It is. As MDTerp429 said, it's under the name TP-II550 (Truepower - II).

The heatsink packaged with the retail CPU will have a thermal pad pre-installed.

Honestly, I'm not sure. They both look the same. They both should include a Driver CD...but it wouldn't hurt to download the lastest ones though.

You get a free motherboard with the more expensive one though...

one more question. are you planning actually going SLI in the *near* future? some ppl find that when they go to purchase the 2nd card, prices are such that better performance is obtained by just buying the newest card, rather then a matching card for SLI...with that in mind, you could save $$$ by ditching the SLI mobo (and maybe supply) if you won't be adding a second card anytime soon...
