budget case/psu recommendation

anyone have any recommendations for a budget case and/or psu for a non-gaming build. this is mostly an internet pc. budget is $325-$350 but will go as high as $400 if absolutely necessary. the recipient already has an OS.

here's the specs:
$140 - athlon 64 3000 newcastle
$60 - biostar geforce 6100-M7
$45 - corsair value select 2x256 MB
$55 - wd 80 gb sata150
-------------------------------
$295 total before PSU/case

system will also have 2 opticals and a fdd.

I looked at the fortron FSP350 psu ($35): http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817104931

i also considering a sempron 2800+ to save $65, but thats another topic. still need case and psu. looking for a recommendation for each peice or a combo that would adequately power and cool the system. likewise, if anyone has a particular part they wish to avidly warn me to steer clear of, thats cool too.

thx in advance

For non-gaming, i'd say the sempron processor should be fine.

Antec has some good quality cheaper case/psu combos - one springs to mind that includes a 350w smartpower, check newegg. If you decide to go with the fortron, that will be sufficient too.

You shouldn't need to worry about cooling, too much. A rear exhaust fan in addition to the PSU fan will be fine.

thx freakitchen. i'll probably end up with an antec, as i know more about the non cheap stuff, then the cheap stuff. i kind of posed this question to find if there is an adequate "cheaper" solution that would work fine that i'm just overlooking because i know nothing about the cheap guys (i just avoid them).

if i go with an antec or similarly reputable brand, i'll probably drop down to the sempron. i'm buying/building for a friend so i'm trying to spend as little as possible and still have something "adequate" for a few good years.

FSP and Sparkle have some good budget power supplies. Ensure that you get one with the proper ATX spec. I checked out that motherboard and you need an ATX 2.0 unit (24 pin connector) power supply...Here's a couple choices:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103934
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104901
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103509

I'd choose the latter since it has one large 120mm fan, which will be very quiet.

thx blue60007. that antec supply comes with the antec 1650B case for 62.99. its looking like thats the winner, as i just can't bring myself to consider any of the cases that are under $30. unless someone can recommend one...

Which Antec case? Make sure it is a "2.0" power supply, one with a 24 pin main connector.

ah yes, thx for reminding me. i keep forgetting that some of the cases come with smart power, but not the 2.0 thing to have the 24 pin connector. i guess that throws out the slk1650B

I really wouldn't buy a sub $30 case. They have sharp edges, a thin construction and are generally not fun to work with. If you're struggling to find a case/ATX2 PSU combo, you can always purchase the two seperately.

Actually, that one is an ATX 2.0 unit. Looking at the pictures, I see 24 pins, and the Antec website lists it as a 2.0. Seems odd they wouldn't advertise that in writing on Newegg.

separate is fine, thats how i build. for this budget build, i'm struggling to trying to find cheap components that i don't inherently distrust. thus, this thread. was hoping someone could maybe throw out a cheapie that they found worked suprisingly good despite the price! LOL

The Antec 1650 cases do come with a 350 watt ATX 2.0 power supply. I've been using this case for basic Intel builds that use ATX 2.0 motherboards (24 pin motherboard power connection) and the power supply works fine. Just don't use it for a gaming rig using the latest gaming video card. For basic builds that use either on-board video or lower end video cards that power supply is fine.

i don't think i'm going to get lucky and find a swan amidst the ugly ducklings in the cheap range. it seems about that the going price for a trusty psu and case (combo or separate) is about $80, and i'd rather spend that for my friend then give them something i'll just have to replace later. if the 1650B does have the 24 pin connector (i think it does), then that will do just fine. at least its a brand that is reputable...

thx cricket. that settles it. i'm not racking my brain to find anything cheaper. even though this rig won't be for gaming, i still don't think a cheap case or psu will do it justice...

what you've decided on looks good. just in case you wanted to see one more option in my opinion cooler master makes some nice cases (the centurion 5) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119047 which is $50 and there is a FSP PSU that would be solid which i believe is $45, or this Xclio http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189003 which I am about the build with and I hear good things. just thought I'd throw that in there and get my 100th post as well! take care
