Troubles with the IDE
Hey, i'm almost done building my first computer and just need a video card. So i boot it to make sure everthing is working right. Then i plug in the IDE cables and the hard drive doesnt turn on, nor does the the dvd drive open. But when i take out the IDE Cables the hard drive turns on and the drive opens and closes. Are the IDE drives turned off or something. or is the mobo bad?

Try a different IDE cable. Also do you have another drive you could try? Are the DVD-ROM and hard drive on the same channel (same cable)?

i had those problems before, but never with both at the same time (HD and opticals) did you try swapping IDE cables? are you pluging the HD as primaryIDE and opticals for SeondaryIDE?
-if it only happen with the HD, it could be that your HD is not compatible with the rest of your system. but since thats not the case, im pretty sure its the cables!

I'm having the same issues with the IDE connection. I now believe my old power supply fried both IDE controllers.

Yes, the POST or Power on self test...pretty mutch takes an inventory of whats connected to your system. Since you dont have a video card, the system wont POST and therefore dosent know whats what.

oh wow!...i always thought POST would tell us what is not conected. so if you didnt have a videocard it would beep the designated code.
guess i was wrong is it the same for other devices like RAM and the CPU? *damn it...am i hijacking his thread?* |

Is there a pattern to the beeps? 1 long and 2 short?
But yes, if there is no video card the computer will just beep at you. Cricket

I would just wait until you get the video card and then see what happens. Right now you really can't do anything.
