The typical new build!
Hey, I'm trying to do build a computer for the first time and I'm a little lost. I am wanting a rig that is primarily for gaming but may need to do college work or check stuff on the net. So I have been looking around reading similar posts but I just dont know where to start because there are just so many different components to use.
So I just went ahead and followed a pc maker thing on a website and this is what I got... Total System Cost =£600 - £750 [CPU Intel Pentium4 640[3.2,RET,775 2MB] £124.00 MOBO Abit Fatal1ty AA8XE Intel925, PCI-E,SATA,Dual LAN,SND DDR2 only! £91.95 CD/DVD Thing Samsung 52x52x32x16 CDRW/DVD Black £18.00 Memory Kingston 1GB DDR2 PC4200 SDRAM KVR533D2N4/1G £48.10 Grahpics Card Sapphire Radeon X800GTO 256MB PCI-E 87-AC60-0A-SA £109.00 Case 4in1 MIDI Tower,KB,Mse, Spkr http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.a...Mse%2C+Spkr+++ £25.00 Harddrive 200GB Maxtor D/Max+10 133/7200 8M £65 I was just wondering if that all worked, if there were something better to use (like AMD etc), if it would be a good gaming PC etc. I noticed from ohter posts that you were recommending other PSU and cases so I wasnt sure about the one I picked. ANy help would be much appreciated!! |

Looks good. That motherboard is a bit expensive, I think it's way overkill in your situation. Save the money and get something more basic.
Samsung drives aren't very good. You might look at a LITE-ON or NEC, and why not get a DVD-RW for a little more? You can get quality power supplies from Antec, Enermax, FSP (Forton Source), Seasonic, Sparkle, or XClio...

I agree with blue, though if you want that mobo it is quite good..might be overkill but its a good choice none the less.
Do you need a 200GB hdd? if you have the cash, Id go with a 74GB 10,000 RPM raptor and possibly another HDD for storage. Also heres a list of good psu's http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=131195

Hey, thanks for your help!! I picked that MOBO cos I think it had a network card but I might be wrong.
Do I need another powersupply and extra fans or should the ones in the case be fine? If anyone knows of any parts that would be better for a similar price please share! I dont have to stick to these pieces, I was just picking stuff because I wasnt sure and thats what I got. |

Any modern motherboard will have onboard networking.
No, don't use that power supply. Even a quality 350W power supply would be struggling with this build. A few good brands: You can get quality power supplies from Antec, Enermax, FSP (Forton Source), Seasonic, Sparkle, or XClio... PSU Reference Guide I think if you find a good ASUS motherboard, that's half the cost, you could probably upgrade the video card. |

Spam, noticed you're working in GBP, if you're looking for decent online stores in the UK, try www.ebuyer.co.uk and www.overclockers.co.uk. Particularly check the latter store for power supplies, they stock Tagen, which are great units.

A friend of mine said he had heard Kingston memory wasnt very good and I should also make sure its generic memory.

Although I don't personally use Kingston, I've heard a number of instances - on this forum and elsewhere - of Kingston incompatibility, causing system instability. I'd stick with Corsair Value Slect RAM.

Yeah, there's been a lot of compatibility issues with Kingston RAM lately.
