First build... keeps turning off
Hi,
I've just put together my first build, and I'm having problems starting up. I can turn it on, the display comes up, and I can get to BIOS or let it continue to Windows setup (using XP cd to boot). After about 3-4 mintues, the computer will freeze (setup will halt or I'll no longer be able to move around inside of BIOS), and after another 30 seconds or so the computer will shut off. I'm pretty confident it's not an overheating issue, because monitoring the CPU temp in BIOS it doesn't get much above 30 C before this happens. What should I look into first? Motherboard: MSI P4N SLI CPU: P4 640 3.2ghz GPU: XFX 6800gs HD: Western Digital 250gb SATA PSU: Sparkle 550W RAM: 2x1gb PQI DDR2 667 in dual channel |

You might still want to double check that the heatsink is installed properly. The LGA775 heatsink is kind of tricky to install. Here's a guide.
And try running the computer with just one stick of RAM installed for now. How many optical drives are installed? What brand and models? Sometimes a faulty optical drive can cause weird problems. Cricket

Just one optical drive: a Lite-On CD/DVD Burner. Seems to read the XP cd well enough until the system freezes and shuts down. I'll try running it with just one stick of RAM tomorrow. Thanks.

Well, it doesn't seem to be the RAM, unless both sticks are bad. Also I double checked my work on the heatsink and it seems fine, and again my CPU temps are low.
I've looked around more thoroughly in BIOS, before it freezes and turns off, and all of my drives and my processor appear just as they should. One thing I noticed is just as it freezes, I hear a faint click from somewhere in the case... |

The click might be coming from the power supply. Do you have another compatible one to swap in to test with?

Yeah I think the power supply is the most likely culprit, hopefully I can borrow one from a friend in the next few days.
