New comuter using old HD won't boot
I've recently replaced most of my Dell computer and put it together. As soon as I turned it on, it started beeping at me with long slow beeps and a blank black screen. When I restarted again, the screen went up this time but said that it couldnt boot from IDE or floppy, then said system HALT and just had a long beep that didn't end until I shut it off. If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

The DELL hard drive is looking for the DELL motherboard and when it doesn't find it it stops the boot process.
Did you get a OS CD with that DELL or did they give you a restore CD? Or does it rely on a restore partition to restore the OS? Cricket

hi silentbob.welcome to the forums
just to start you off.....450watts is NOTHING! for the system your running i advise you to have 550W just to be safe. you could try clearing the CMOS or loading "FAIL SAFE" settings in the BIOS.might help. but power to me seems to be your main problem. HTH *Edit: woops...cricket might have the solution* |

Thanks for the fast responses guys. I'm looking at my reinstallation cd for Windows XP right now and I'm getting a little worried about it. On it, I just noticed it says "only use this CD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell computer." I think I'm just gonna need a new hard drive that isn't made by Dell (read Hell's Workshop).

Sometimes those CDs will work on non-Dell computers, and sometimes they won't. Besides, if it works, it's technically illegal...you should just get a new copy of XP, no need for a new drive.
You could try doing a repair install off of that CD if you can get it too.
