Someone help me
I just finished my new comp, and during boot-up any number of things will happen, all resulting in the computer turning off and having to be unplugged to be turned back on. Sometimes it will get a ways into installing windows before first the light on the monitor goes to yellow and the screen goes blank, then shortly after it turns off. I have tested almost everything and think it is either the hard drive, the videocard or the motherboard itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am using a Machspeed p4m800 motherboard with a intel celeron d 2.93 ghz My hardrive is a maxtor diamondmax10 160gb My videocard is the GeForce Fx 5500 256mb I am using 2gb of ultra pc3200 ddr 400mhz memory. I hope somebody knows whats going on.. |

I have had problems installing Windows in the past by having too much memory installed, try using just one stick of memory.
Do you have access to another machine that you could trouble shoot the video card and hard drive in?

Check that the CPU heatsink isn't loose. If it is reseat it right.
Remove all but 1 stick of RAM. If you have more than 1 optical drive, disconnect the one you are not using for installing the operating system.

On celeron processors the heatsink has a bevelled edge, which is surprisingly easy to fit the wrong way round so that the heatsink doesn't make good contact.
I would monitor the power supply levels and on-board temperatures via the BIOS for a while to see if there is any bad trends. I'd also check out what facilities the BIOS has for overtemperature protection - sometimes the thresholds can be altered. How long on average before it crashes? |

Thats the weird thing, there seems to be no pattern in when it crashes, and usually, if I don't proceed to boot from cd, it won't crash at all. I have tried disabling the automatic shutdown in bios but it doesn't seem to help, also the temperature remains a steady 40* even when it crahses which leads me to believe its not temperature related.

OK - if temperature is OK, then I'd look for something peculiar with the PSU, or the CD drive. Your problem still sounds hardware related. I'd try another CD drive next. Also, when CD drives are in full use typically draw 1.5 amps at 12V and 1 amp at 5V....maybe the PSU is faulty, and continued use of the CD drive causes a failure.
Are the PSU and CD drive new? Also, did you try removing a stick of memory...did that work? Just keep going, eliminating every piece of hardware in turn. Do one at a time though - otherwise if it works, you won't know what it was that you fixed. |

What is the brand of the power supply and how many watts does it put out? Sounds like it might be defective.
