First thing to do would be to get a budget in mind. Try and conver that roughly to dollars (i see you're in England) and search the forums for that amount. Recent posts should give you an idea of parts you can achieve within your budget.

To save a few dollars, reuse components from your existing machine like case, drives, etc. You will want to add a SLI certified PSU to your list.

So mate, do you even know who you prefer...AMD or Intel.
Second, do you have any parts you can reuse (monitor, mouse, keyboard) is this build only the case (whats in the box) or everything. |

I'd say get something in between. The 6600GT may not give you enough, but the X1800XT is probably too much. Look at a 6800GT or 7800GT, an X800XL or an X1800XL, they are kind of the middle of the road (best bang for the buck right now). All depends on how much you are willing to spend on a video card. Personally, I wouldn't spend $550 (~340£) on a video card, but I would pay more than $150 (~[78£).

I'd say for the motherboard, an ASUS A8N-E, the CPU - 3700+, the RAM - at least 1 gig of Corsair Value Select (DDR400) (get a dual channel kit).

Foxconn isn't a recommended brand. I'd stick with ASUS boards to save yourself some headaches. Keep in mind if you get a SLI board, you'll want to get a SLI-Certified power supply.
Oh, what am I saying? Don't get a SLI board with an ATi card, you can't run dual ATi cards in a SLI board. You can run a single ATi card on a SLI board though, but it'd be silly to get the SLI board. |

Don't know where you're planning on shopping for these parts jase874, but I'd recommend browsing www.overclockers.co.uk, they have overtaken ebuyer in my estimations recently and stock a good range of higher end parts - particularly quality power supplies.
If you want to go SLI, then you need to go Nvidia for your graphics card. I'd recommend the 7800GT (around £200). If you're keen on ATI, then you may as well get a non SLI board...check out the Asus A8N-E. Freakitchen |

jase, looks good so far - but you should go for a 1GB dual channel kit (2 x 512MB modules). And don't forget an OS (like XP Home OEM). |

[blue6007] i did take a look at the foxconn mobo's and did find one but with the parts i have got already it meant i was on a very tight budget so i had to go with that cheaper alternative, trust me i did not ignore u on your advice we spent hours looking and reading but money started comming into it so the cheaper board it was, but thankyou for the suggestion. ive still got the OS [xp] from my first and last build, and i have ran out of money so im gunna havto use my old memory for the time being which is 2 1Gb modules i think they're PC3200 but im not sure, thankyou for all the advice it has helped me loads and now i just need to buy it and biuld it, the fun part!

You can't use Win XP on more than one machine. You need to purchase another copy to stay legal.
