Unhappy first build, try outside build but won't power up

Here's my story;

I first put everything together but couldn't get POST (but lights and fans were on), then I tried the outside build. During the process discovered CPU did not seat completely down. I assembled the necessities outside of the case w/ CPU seating fixed. This time only the LED green light on MOBO was on, yet nothing showed, no fans, not even the fan of PSU.

Did I short the MOBO or CPU some how?

Is there any way that I can detect what component went wrong?

Thanks!

Intel MOBO D865PERL
Celeron 2.93
Ultra DDR 400 512mb
Ultra 350W PSU
Asus v9400 AGP 128mb (NVIDIA mx 4000)

Welcome to PCMechanic, nc280!

Sounds like your PSU may need replacing. The motherboard is getting power but not enough to get it properly working. Do you have another PSU to swap in and test with?

How are you trying to power up the computer? With just the power switch on the power supply? Or are you jumping the PWR ON pins on the front panel header?

Does that motherboard have a 4 pin auxillary power connector near the CPU socket? If so, is it plugged in?

Unfortunately, I don't. It's a brand new PSU though ....

Yes, I simply switch on from the power supply. Could you please explain
a bit more how to do for the 2nd one?

BTW, I called the PSU company, the technician told me to connect just
the mother board and the PSU to see if it works. I tried but did not.
Is there a rationale behind how the power supposed to be connected between MOBO and PSU, among other parts?

It does, and it's plugged.

Hitting the switch on the power supply only lets power reach the power supply and a small amount reaches the motherboard but that won't get the computer to start up. To start the computer you have to first connect the power button power connector to the correct pins of the front panel header on the motherboard.

Check this web page for instructions on hooking up the wires from the front of the case to the front panel header. Scroll about half way down the page. The information should also be in your motherboard manual.

I got it today. Moved MOBO in and had BIOS set. It's a good lesson for
me and my son, our first computer project -- not to forget the principle.
Thanks
