First Build...

After having my laptop (In my signature) for about 2 years, it has become somewhat outdated. I decided to build my own computer. I already have a LCD monitor and WinXP Operating System. I won't buy the parts until the summer, but right now, I want to know if my build is good. It's going to be meant for gaming, and multitasking. Another thing about reviewing this build is that the memory is going to be replaced within the next year after it is built.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 1GHz 939

Mobo: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe ATX 939 Socket

Case: MGE Quantum Black ATX

Memory: Corsair Valueselect 1GB(2 x 512) 184-Pin DDR

GPU: eVGA Geforce 7800GTX 256MB PCI-E x16

HDD: SAMSUNG SpinPoint P 160GB 7200 RPM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152020

CD/DVD Optical: LITE-ON Black 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM

PSU: Antec True Power II 550W SLi Supported

Thermal Gel: Artic Silver 5 Gel
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835100007

The total amount for this computer comes out to $1300.22. I'm opened for any comments or opinions. (Besides the memory)

Skip the AS 5 gel and stick with the stock heat sink fan that comes with the Retail cpu. That way you'll keep your 3 year warranty. I'd go with a Seagate SATA hdd over that Samsung. Seagate has 5 year warranty and a better reputation.

Yes, the new Seagate SATA drives are known for being very quiet.

*Changed* Seagate Barrucuda 160GB 7200RPM SATA

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148105

This adds another $9, making my total $1309.

Anybody else have any recommendations? (Besides the memory)

I like the rest of the parts selection. Do you plan on a DVD burner? I'd go the extra bucks for a Liteon DVD burner instead of the DVD rom. You can still use it to play CD's or DVD's.

That build looks solid. If you aren't going to buy any parts until the summer, you will definitely get them a little cheaper as there are new AMD chipsets coming out (~spring of '06 i believe) that will be newer than nForce4 (still very good IMO), but will be a little pricier as they will be new. Do keep your eye out on the new stuff that comes out, though the a8n-sli will still be a nice board in a few months. also, as Panama said stick with the stock fan and heatsink from AMD as they are definitely adequate (my new build, same MB as you but with a 3200+ is idling at 30C for the CPU and 29C for the MB) and won';t void you warranty. just my .02

steve

edit: also, if you are really into a quiet PC, look into getting the asus board with the passive cooling on the southbridge, as my only quip with my new a8n-sli is the chipset fan which is kinda loud.
