1st pc build, using asus a8n sli delux mobo with 3200+ amd, 512 of Ultra pc3200 ddr, 600watt enermax noisetaker power supply in a LianLi case with a liteon dvd burner and a geforce 4000 MX video card with a western digital HD.
I didnt know about motherboard standoffs until i tried to plug a pci card into my mobo and it wouldnt seat. i tried multiple times to boot my computer without standoffs. i have since installed standoffs in correct locations lining them up with the holes correctly, and my monitor is not coming on. Fans spin, lights light up, and drives spin....just no display. I know my video card is good as i have tested it in another pc. i have no pc to test my processor in, but it seems very quiet. i havent been able to hear it over the fans, which leads me to wonder if it's even working. (anyone know how quiet this processor is?) Could not using standoffs at first have messed up my motherboard? It's not grounding out now. Also, im wondering if theres a special way to run a pci video card on a rig that has pci express slots. I still plan to get a pci express vid card when i get the money, but whats the use if its not going to work?

Have you tried an out of case assembly to completely eliminate the possibility of a short?
The processor doesn't make noise - the heatsink's fan does. Is it running (the fan)? You might check for burn marks on the motherboard to see if something got fried (hopefully not). More than likely the motherboard should have a legacy PCI slot to test the PCI video card in. You would use the card just like any other video card.

out of case
I have NOT tried the out of case install, but i will be attempting that as soon as i get off of work today. The heatsink fan and all other fans in the case are running, its just that i cant hear the processor clicking away. It may just be my old AMD processor was loud and this one isnt, because i cant hear it even with my head inside the case. Update will follow after i get home.
As far as the video card goes, i just wasnt sure if an A8n SLI is ready to take a straight PCI card right off the bat, or if its looking for a PCI express card that i dont have yet. Last edited by woejipums; 01-03-2006 at 04:30 PM. |

Yea you may want to give an out of case assembly a shot. Also, obviously double check that your monitor is on! And I'd try to reseat the video card in your PCI slot making sure it is all the way in. Also try a few different slots I believe you have 3? If you still get nothin try an out of case assembly as explaned here: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409
steve edit: your processor should not be making any noise, I have the same exact processor as you and about the same motherboard. i would imagine if the bios doesn't see anything in the PCI express slot if would start looking in the pci slots, but maybe someone else knows this for sure Last edited by Louds3; 01-03-2006 at 04:35 PM. |

Is the 4 pin auxillary power connector near the CPU plugged in? A lot of people overlook that one.

Yeah, the power plugs are all 3 plugged into the motherboard. Still no luck by the way.

Still need help
Ive seen lots of A8n people having this same problem. do you think it might be that they're sending out some crapped out boards?

It's possible the board is bad, but I would see if you get any more suggestions around here or on any other forums about things to try, sorry I can't help more but I don't have the experience building that a lot of others here do, but IMO you may have a bad board. Not sure but maybe try calling Asus, not sure how good their tech support is or if its free but maybe give it a shot.
