New Build Part Advice/Reccomendantion
Hey all I am attempting my first build. Im going with mid range AMD build.
What I am most concerned with is compatabilty and best value/performance for my money. Ive decided to only list three core components so far. Any other part reccomendations would also be helpful. Motherboard-ASUS A8N-SLI NVIDIA nForce4 Retail $122 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131524 or ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe NVIDIA nForce4 Retail $162 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131517 Is the $40 really worth it? CPU-Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego Retail $224 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103539 Video Card-eVGA Geforce 6600GT 128MB - Retail $139 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130214 So any help would be great Thanks |

I'd drop the board to a non-SLI board, like the A8N-E. I don't think it'd reallly be wise to go with SLI. You usually want to have a pretty hefty budget for that.

Agree about getting a non-sli board. You only need that if you are planning on running two video cards.
Case/PSU Antec Optical drives Liteon Hard drives Seagate or Western Digital SATA 7200 rpm 16Mb cache OS XP home oem floppy drive Monitor whatever the budget will allow

if you go with the deluxe mobo you'll have mre storage capabilities and faster LAN speeds. i agree with SLI being expensive though. i would scrap the sli and buy a better graphics card. like the evga 6800gt 512mb.

For the same price as a 6800GT 512, you could probably get a 7800GT, which would outperform the 6800GT 512.

What exactly is sli? It is only for graphics cards? I dont plan on doing much heavy gaming so I dont think the 512mb is really necessary? But I would like to experiment with ocing in the future.

SLI allows you to run two identical video cards together for better performance.
Overrated, overhyped and overpriced in my opinion. I agree the 256 7800gt would be better than the 512 6800gt.

After going through more parts here is the revised build
CPU- AMD Athlon 64 San Diego 224 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103539 MB- ASUS A8N-E 110 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131530 or ASUS A8N5X 96 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131569 Graphics Card- eVGA Geforce 6600GT 128mb 139 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130214 Case- Antec LifeStyle SONATA II 450Watt 100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129155 DVD/CD- NEC 39 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827152058 I have most of the other components. A hard drive, moniter, and memory still waiting for a good deal. This should build a solid system. Does anyone out there have a problem with with parts or know any better ones. I stuck with the 6600GT because for twice the price is dont know if ill use the power in the 7800GT. I dont plan on doing much heavy gaming. My last big question is if anyone knows which MB is more reliable, the A8N5X got 5 eggs on newegg and the A8N-E only 4. I read throught most of the reviews, but not sure if anyone has any first hand knowledge. Thanks again |
