AMD and thermal goo

Ok, I received my processor today (AMD 4000 san diego) and I looked in the box. I see the processor and the heatsink, I dont see the thermal goo that I read about onall the PC building websites. DO the new processors not need it?

With retail box AMD processors, you should find your thermal pad already attached to the bottom of the heatsink. It's only a very thin layer, this is how it should be.

All processors need thermal paste of some kind.

I'm looking at the bottom of the heatsink and it looks like a little square piece of duct tape.
Is that the thermal pad and does it require any addtional steps from me as far as the thermal paste is concerned.
Thanks

"Thermal goo" is most often used by overclockers or when the heat sink is removed after being run for a period of time. Not only is it unnecessary, removing the stock thermal pad and replacing it with thermal paste will void the 3 year warranty that accompanies retail boxed processors.

Yup, that's the stock pad.

Reaally sorry dont mean to hijack. So your saying that if i wanted to replace my heatsink with a better one...like im thinking of now as my processor temps arent satisfactory for me while playin heavy games, I will void my warranty? BTW i do have the infamous presscott core soo yeah lol.

Just a heads up, that thermal pad may have plastic over it that should be removed before installation. Check the manual.
