All right, any advice would be greatly appreciated. I just put together a new computer for my husband. I've got it on, the windows cd is running, setup is taking place (although it seems like it's running way too slow). At the end, I restart the computer. Then, the initial starting of the computer happens, and nothing. It just sits there. The BIOS is to boot from harddrive, so I can't figure out what to do. Any advice is appreciated, even if you think it's common sense. Yes, it's plugged in.
Other than that, I'm stuck. I've looked around in the forums, but can't seem to find anything just like this issue. Could this be a hard drive issue?

Here's the list...
Sorry about that, could be helpful!
Motherboard - Gigabyte P4 Titan GA818656VM3 865GV 478 CUP - Intel P4 e.0E 800M 478P 1MB Memory - 2 gig (1 per strip) of Turbo Brand Memory Hard Drive - Seagate 250GB EIDE 7200-8MB-ATA400 I also have a Sony cd-rom installed, but don't know any info on that. I'm using an old case. The only new parts are listed above, and the system was fine before putting them in. Is this enough info? |

Are you upgrading a name brand computer?
What brand power supply are you using? Does that motherboard have on-board video? Or is there a video card? I would go to the Seagate web site and download the hard drive diagnostic software and test the hard drive with it. Cricket

I'm upgrading a custom build. One of my husband's college friends built it, and it ran fine. I'm not sure about the power supply; it was working fine before. There's on-board video and audio, and I'm going to go try to download some drivers for the hard drive. The store claimed they installed them, but it was an oem hard drive.

Do you know how many watts the power supply puts out? It might not be enough for the upgraded parts.

So, I downloaded the hard drive diagnostic, and can't figure out how to make it run. However. I only have a 250W power supply. Do you think this is the underlying problem. It's by Power Man.

PowerMan power supplies are good quality units but 250 watts for a P4 is pretty low. Does it even have the square 4 pin 12v power connector for the motherboard?

It does have that, but it's been running awfully slow. You think if I upgrade the power supply it should work properly? I think I'll try that.

Okay, I'm back with still more problems. Everything's the same, except now I have a 450W power supply. I put the cd in for Windows, it runs installs, blah blah blah. Then, the computer restarts. I change the primary boot to hard disk. It runs through the bios stuff, then sits there. I can't figure this out. What do you guys think?
And about the hard drive diagnostic - this is probably a stupid sounding question, but how do I run it if I can't get into windows? If I just put it in, nothing happens. Maybe I'm using the wrong one? |

So, you were able to install Windows okay but upon reboot the system just stalls? No error message?
Can you list all the components in your computer (all the drives and all the cards) so we know what you're working with. You're getting the one good POST beep at startup? Cricket

Thought I'd let you know, see what you think about this...
The components are listed above, btw, a few replies up. Everything's the same, no extra tomfoolery. I switched the hard drive to cable select setting (no jumpers) and everything works fine - as long as I use the slave end of the IDE cable. Windows is running and everything. Is this normal?? |

Are you sure you have the jumper set up right and the ultra ATA cable hooked up correctly? Double check your configuration at this Seagate support page. According to that page, no jumper is the slave setting.
