Compatible, or not?

Hello, I'm just checking, before I order all the parts for an upgade I'm doing *for a friend.*, does all of this go together well? Please tell me if it is all compatible, than worry about anything else you want to say *comments, whatever.* Thanks

Case:

Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130491

Hard drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144239

RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440

PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189004

Proc.:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103535

Graphics card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130214

Please tell me if this is all compatible. We are using his CD Rom drives and the floppy drive *all are IDE cabled, i beleive, really old PC.*

ALSO: *we already have a new OS from his father, don't worry about that.*

Thanks,

Locust

All looks compatible to me.

Any particular reason why you're not going Socket 939 for the board and processor? You might find this slightly more expensive, but it will mean the system is considerably more upgradable in the future. skt 754 is currently being phased out.

You say you're re-using old optical drives. Whilst this is fine, you might consider a DVD Burner, they're really not expensive.

I know about the phasing out, I will look more into it. If I could get some links to a Mobo about the same price, as well as proc about the same price, 754 socket, that'd be nice.

I'm running on their budget, and we're a bit over as is, so I don't think that will work .

What i found quickly..

You linked to another 754 combo there. There's nothing wrong with your previous selection for both motherboard and processor...just suggested that if your budget allows, then go 939.

On the flip side, if you're running to a tight budget, then 754 is perhaps a good way to go. There seems little benefit in downgrading on the performance of your parts just to achieve upgradability. Whatever works best for you.

Ah, haha, wow, sorry about that linking.

Ok, well, our budget it to tight to upgrade to 939.

I'm wondering though. He wants to use this to play games like Counter Strike source/ BF2, etc. Will this run well with the games he wants to play?

Thanks

The 6600GT should be able to play the Source engine pretty well, and BF2 decently (at max settings).

Yep, your revised list is compatible. Whilst MSI motherboards aren't the absolute best, I've had good results from them recently. Good luck with the build.

Thanks much, If you can find another board meeting all of my REQs., for the same price about *nothing 10$ more, really tight* that'd be good. Don't bother unless you think you can find one better though.

On Newegg, I can't see anything of higher quality than the board you chose for less than $80.

Nice, didn't knotice the 450W model. About how many Watts are needed to power this? Also, is there a video card for about the same amount of money that is better than the eVGA i found?

Thanks much!

good power supply, thermaltake 430watt.

it runs my 7800GT fine. it will work easily with a 6600GT. Comes with a PCI express connector too, but im not sure if the 6600GT needs a external connector... does it. well the supply is good, but i might think that the rebate is over.. but its still fairly priced.

Also for ram, just go with the PATRIOT 1gb, it comes with heatsinks and timing is decent.

Ok, that's better than waht i had picked out? ( the ram)

I changed the PSU to the one you showed me.

Anyone have a Video card in mind that might be 10$ more or so? PCI-E

I somewhat disagree with the changes that FireByyrd suggested. XClio PSUs are of higher quality than Thermaltake. Likewise with Corsair, better quality than Patriot memory.

Without wanting to confuse you with conflicting opinions, I'd suggest checking out some other builds on the forum. I think you'll find that both XClio and Corsair have been used very frequently, and have demonstrated consistent reliability.

Hmm...
I have to say, i personally go with Corsair.
I have had a xcilo PSU and it was nice. Maybe I'll switch the changes back. I liked the thermaltake because of the sleeved wires mainly.

I'll second the Corsair RAM and XClio power supply.

Keep in mind that doesn't help the performance of the power supply any. Might be one reason why they do that, sleeve them and make it look good so people will buy there power supply over the higher quality, more expensive ones.
