If i am using a wristband grounding do i hook the clip to the case or the PSU and does the PSU need to be plugged in?

I've hooked my wristband to the case and everything went fine.
But wait for a second opinion because i was confused where to hook it and i've decided on my own to hook it up in the case. Make sure u dun put ur stuff on a carpet and dun wear wool clothing because it generates static electricity in ur body easily. EDIT: it is safer to do ur work on a wooden surface. Good Luck bro, MoD |

It doesn't really matter, if you were using a lot of parts outside of the case the powersupply would technically be better i guess. The powersupply will bring you down to earth ground while you will just equalize the case. This will normally be fine but if for some reason the case got a charge to it and you touched some ram or something you could damage it. I think everything i just said was right. I don't really worry that much about static, i just touch the powersupply periodically.

yes and yes to both questions.
the only way to be sure your connected to a earth ground is to have the power supply connected to a power strip and have it plugged into a grounded outlet, you can have the power strip switch turned off, you will still be connected to the earth ground that way, then the wrist strap can be clipped to the case ground. the important thing is to be sure that you and the case are connected to a good earth ground, there may be some who will say that they have just touched the case and was ok, but that is not connecting anything to the earth ground. there is only one way to connect everything to earth ground and the power cord is it. |
