No Anti Static Bags?

Read sticky about trouble with new build. So the anti static bag can actually cause electrostatic build up? Everyone ive talked to and guides ive read said put parts on the anti static bags they come in...

So what surface is good? The box it comes in? Now I dont know what to do, was planning on using anti static bags. Maybe get a vinayl covering?

No, that is when booting up you don't want to have them on the anti static bags becuase they can cuase the motherboard to short. If you are just handling the parts, you can go ahead and set them on the antistatic bags, or the box.

anti-static bags are not conductive to dc voltage, otherwise the bios battery in every motherboard would be dead in a matter of days. I have tested that theroy with a high-pot tester and a megohmeter and it shows the bags are non conductive, but they do resist any type of static.

Misunderstood then, while building bags are okay, wasnt getting why they'd be used for holding the senstive parts but puttng them ontop would be bad. Thanks for clarification =)

inside the bag is safe. the outside conducts what small curent there is around the bag(ususally through the black strips) so therefore putting it on the outside, electrical current can flow into your device

heh okay so I didnt misunderstand... so putting parts on the bag itself ISNT safe? Well guides should say that. So what should I put it on?

wood=very safe
carpet= bad idea
metal table tops= dont think that will do
anti-static mat=just as good as wood...but more expensive

Well I was going to use my dining room table (wood, polished (not recently), but shouldnt matter...) to build it anyways, I know wood isnt a good conductor but thought the anti static bags would be sure bet. Good to know thank you... and that spending 30 dollars or even more on an anti static mat is a waste =)

(Also, from the sticky, using box mobo came in, is that better? Don't want to scratch up wood, but just want safest area to put the parts down. (at least mobo since thats most work out of case/box)

Using the box is fine, so long as there's no foam padding in it.

What I tend to do is cut down one side of the box the case came it so that it will lay flat. Having the cardboard down will keep you from nicking the table.
