greedo Noob with a question

This is my first build and I am having trouble. When i booted up my computer for the first time and I entered the cmos, and go into the standard cmos features it doesn't dtect any of my drives. I have an internal dvd burner and an 120 gb ultra ata IDE hard drive. Also can i load my OS with and external usb cd-rom drive?

Make sure the drives are jumpered properly for the type of IDE cable they're on.

If the cable is a 80 wire IDE cable, set the drive jumper to CS (cable select) and install the cable with blue connector to motherboard, black is the master connector and grey is the slave connector. You want the hard drive on the master connector.

If the cable is a 40 wire IDE cable, set the drive jumper to either master or slave (depending on whether you have one or two drives on the cable).

I'm not sure if this is possible. Does your BIOS have an option to boot from a USB device?
