Newb needs help

Hello everyone.

What a great resource. I did a search, but found nothing specificly that answers the questions I have.

I'm replacing the mobo, cpu, hdd and cdrw in my brothers pc.

mobo gigabyte GA-K8VM800M
CPU AMD 64 2700
Ram DDR400 1G

When I was picking out the hdd, the guy talks me into getting sata. I start to put this thing together and find I need different cables. I'm pretty sure I understand how to get the drivers on floppy and get them installed.

One of my questions is: Which ide slot do I install the cdrw and how should it be jumpered with a sata hdd or does it matter.

Another question is: I only have one sata drive, I believe it should be connected to one of sata0/sata1 connector and enabled in the bios.

I'm also dealing with a case that I have no manual for, so I'm not sure of the polarity of the wires for the front panel connections. I've got an idea, but thought I would ask to be sure. The wire colors are as follows:

power led: green/white
reset switch: blue/white
hdd led: red/white
power switch: blue/white
speaker: red/black

My assumption is all the whites and the one black are (-).

Any comments or idea's??

I know some of this is pretty basic.

I got mine together a couple of years ago o.k., but had all new parts and manuals. And this sata threw me a curve.

Thanks,

pbailey

if you dont have any other HD you can put it one IDE1 there arnt any jumpers on SATA so it dosent matter.

The Black and White represent the ground, remember COLOR is always on the left when you plug the connectors to your mobo, the instructions are found in the mobos manuel

The sata hdd and the ide cdrw should be jumpered independant of each other and since you only have one hdd that is obviously the master.
for the cdrw it depends do you have another optical drive in the pc your planning on using

You should be able to find an online version of the case manual at the manufacturers website.
The SATA drive should go on the 0 or 1 whichever is lower connector on the native SATA controller
CDRW in whichever bay you prefer as long as the cables reach the connectors on the PSU and motherboard.
CDRW goes in the primary IDE controller slot.
Jumper it according to whether the cable is 40 or 80 pin,
80 cable select
40 master or cable select
The jumpering on the CDRW is unrelated to the SATA drive which has no jumpers.

Thanks everybody.

I do have the manual for the mobo, so I know the orientation of (+)(-) for the front panel wires, was just confirming (-) on the wires .

I will only have one optical drive. I plan to install that in IDE1, but still have wonder how that would be jumpered on the drive itself (CS,SL,MA) with the use of sata cables for the hdd. It probably doesn't matter, but just checking.

Thanks, again

Thanks,

As for the manual for the case I can't find manufacturer info anywhere on the case.

The cdrw is 40 pin.

you can leave your optical drive on Cabble slect, but if you have 2 make sure the one of them is on Master, the other on Slave. and the SATA dosent matter it is auto set as Master

Well this didn't go very well. I got it all together and put the drivers to floppy.

When I got to install third party drivers and it enter, it asks for the disk again, hit enter and it asks again and so on.

I tried transfer of drivers on two different floppys and reading on two different floppys.

When I check the floppys the drivers are there. Called mobo tech support and got nada. Was able to confirm with them that I'm getting the correct drivers off the cd.

It's driving me nuts!!!!!!!!!!

On a good note everything else works. one beep on power up, all fans etc.

What's up with the sata??

OS W2K PRO

Any thoughts???

All is well with WD800 Ultra.

Installed above HDD and the comp is purring right along.

I'll get over my frustration with the sata and try to get that installed some day after getting more insight as to why I couldn't get the drivers loaded.

By the way the drivers loaded just fine to the Ultra.
