newbie computer building problems

got all components together, turned on computer, it finds the cd rom and hard disk but when I enter setup, it doesn't list them on auto detect. The next time I rebooted, I get cpu fan error, but the fan is plugged in correctly, and is spinning.

what to I do from here?

i kinda new here too but what might help us to determine some of the issues is if you list the components of your computer. then we will have a better idea of what is going on

ASUS p5gdc deluxe motherboard
intel p4 505 2.6 6 gHz 533 Mhz FSB 1MB L2 Cache processor
Radeon ati 800xl 256 mb pci express video card

any other info needed?

I disconnected the cd rom and hd and still am getting cpu fan error.
If I hit f1, I can boot off floppy disk, run fdisk and it sees the hard disk, but if
I try to get it to boot off hd, it just reboots.

When computer boots up, it checks ide, then a message says cpu fan error, press f1 to continue. When I connect the hard drive, it is listed when the ide check is completed, fdisk finds it, but it won't boot up. this hd is already formated and has system on it, as it was taken from another computer. I want to reformat it and reinstall os again, but at this point it recycles when I try to get it to boot off existing os.

Go into your BIOS and change your boot order to where it boots from your cd rom first. Insert your windows cd go through its set up and do a Repair install. I'm hoping your using xp anyways. You don't need to use fdisk for XP. As far as the fans error, what temps are you getting on the cpu, maybe just the sensor messing up.

try reseting the the cmos to remove the CPu fan error. also do as grieving said, put the primary boot device as CD rom and boot from cd. if you want to reformat its fine if you want your existing XP just do a repair install

I reset the cmos, but the cpu fan error persists. I did get it to boot off the cd so I am going to try and install xp. Thanks for your continued help. How do I get rid of the cpu fan error?

Do you have the CPU heatsink fan plugged onto the CPU FAN header? If it is it could be you have a defective fan that isn't sending out the RPM signal and that's why you're getting the fan error message.

one thing is to build the system out of the computer case. support the motherboard on top of the motherboard box. Double check all connections also.

Are you trying to reuse an XP install that came with a name brand computer?
If so that is the reason for the hardware errors.
You will have to get a new copy of Windows.
The license for factory OEM installs is only good for the original computer and can not be legally transferred to a new build.

I bought a new cpu fan, and the cpu fan error has disappeared, but now when I boot up, it starts to install windows (new install) and comes up with blue screen message, windows has detected a hardware area and halted. When I try and reboot, it comes up windows did not install correctly, select Normal, safe mode, etc, and no matter which I select, it simply reboots. Under the bios setup, none of the ide devices are detected, but on ide scan it does detect the hard drive and cd rom, and will boot from the cd. The xp windows I am trying to install is a full version, not OEM. What do I do now?

Do you have more than 1 stick of RAM installed? Try installing Windows with just 1 stick of RAM.

Test your RAM with Memtest86+ or DocMemory.

Test your hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic utility.

Please list all the components of this computer by brand and model including the power supply.
