Disk Boot Failure

ok i have this computer and on bootup it says DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. now im sure its a hardware problem so i reversed cables on hd and nothing happend. So i took the hard drive and tested it in another computer but still the same thing and it wont even read the thing. I went into bios and used auto detect and it does not come up. Im convinced that the hard drive is dead unless somebody has a different view on this any help would be good thx.

If the drive does not show up in the BIOS and you are sure you have it connected properly, it is probably dead.

Yes the drive did work and now its giving me this error i was thinking is there a windows xp start up disk cause maybe its not comming up because there is no partition so i was thinking FDISK and creating one. But the strange thing is that xp was already installed so there should be a partition on it im confused.

What brand is the hard drive?

Go to the manufacturer's web site and download the diagnostic utility to test the hard drive with.

Since another computer couldn't see this hard drive it's probably dead.

What brand is it?

Not unless you are willing to spend some serious dough.

Does the drive spin up at all? Do you get any noises from it?

I've had some luck getting data off dying IBM hard drives (the ones suffering from the "Click Of Death") by turning them upside down and smacking them with my open palm a few times while they're powered up. Not sure what it does but the clicking stops and I'm able to access the data for a short while. Not sure if this will work in your case though.

Hard disk drive is bad, not formatted:

When attempting to type fdisk you receive a message saying "No Fixed Disks preset", then this could be a bad hard drive or possibly loose connections thats all i needed to know thx guys for your help just found it on this website http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000047.htm
