Talking Two Drives On A New System?

Soon, I am going to build another computer. I wanted some input on this. I plan on using two SATA drives. One about 20-40gig(possibly 60)..then another drive about 120gig..maybe more. We;ll see how prices are. Would it be better to install the OS on the smaller drive..then all the applications on the larger drive? I ask this because I usually reformat my drives about every three months. I never keep crucial stuff on my normal drives, only on my external. I would like to know how this would affect any games I plan on doing..or keeping apps on a seperate drive....then blowing out my small drive when i need to

As long as the drives are the same speed and have the same cache size; it doesnt matter.

Edit: Actually since you dont keep very important info on it, id get 2 indetical drives and stripe them in RAID 0, improving preformance and even if lets say one of the drives goes south..you dont need to worry about crucial data being lost.

well the games will run abit faster if its on the same HD as the OS. other then that i think its a good idea to keep the smaller one for the OS then the bigger one for all the apps

Both ideas make sense......here is what I would ultimately like to accomplish...strictly from the hard drive perspective......

Drive 0 A smaller drive that I can reformat whenever I need. I usually use Darik's Boot and Nuke, and run 11 passes of the twister. So, it does need to be a smaller drive. Also, I can install games and apps to try them out before I decide to keep it. This way, I know what I want to use or not and what to keep or not.

Drive 1 A larger capacity drive that all my music, games, photos, and apps will permanatley run from. This will never be formatted and would possible contain the Restore point for WinXp.

I am not sure that if I install Win on one drive, that I can run all my apps from the second drive, and still be able to format my drive at will, without reinstalling apps again. I was thinking it might affect the registry in some odd way? or cause other issues.....

I like having my main drive clean, and minimal. I am not sure if there are any other options? Maybe a RAID with SATA....then an external drive....but how do i backup games?....hmmmm....possibilities
