New build, New Problem!
Hoping someone can advise on this problem, it's a new one on me!
Put together a new build for a customer, specs as follows: Gigabyte GA-K8VT800 AMD Sempron 2800+ 64Bit Corsair VS 512MB Antec Smartpower 350w Seagate 80GB SATA HD. After enabling SATA in my bios, and changing the mode from 'RAID' to 'IDE', my drive was recognised on reboot, and windows was fully and correctly installed. The system, when running, runs flawlessly. However, on cold boot (from an initial 'power on'), the hard drive is not recognised, and I get a disk boot failure message. By doing a soft reset at this point, the HD is always recognised, and boot into windows continues fine. Continuous restarts show no problems. Only on a fresh power on is the HD not recognised. SATA appears to be native to the controller, since my drive was recognised on second (restarted) boot. I've tried clearing the CMOS, also have changed the power and data cable to the hard drive. Same issues. The only thing not tried is a BIOS flash, which seems the next obvious step to me. If anyone has any ideas, it would be much appreciated, I've never come across this error before and has got me quite stumped! Freakitchen

Go into the BIOS and see if there is an option to delay the boot process a few seconds. The system might be booting up so fast that the hard drive can spin up fast enough.

Thanks for the idea Cricket. I delayed the boot process for 10 seconds, but the same thing occurs. The delay halts the boot at the memory test, then proceeds to find IDE devices...but fails to locate the hard drive. A soft-reboot locates the hard drive fine and boots normally.
Any more thoughts? Freakitchen |

Think I may have found a solution to this one folks...
After a BIOS update, which did not solve the problem directly, I changed the SATA mode from IDE to RAID. On doing so, the VIA RAID screen activated itself on bootup (after IDE detection) and the system now boots successfully from cold. Freakitchen |
