Lots of things can happen. From faulty PSU, faullty motherboard, static electricity, lightning. The speaker wires are built in or changable? More info would be nice.

List the brand of PSU used... I willing to bet the PSU if faulty did more than fry the speaker wire... Check to make sure there are no burn marks on the PSU connector for the MB...

were the wires connected to the correct pins? If they were on the wrong pims that may account for the burning wires. What is the motherboard you have?

Well here is my system..........does it matter which way u connect the speaker to the pins?....anyway i pulled that speaker wire out and started my pc without it and it booted up fine, however when i tryed to format my HD the long way it sat on 0% for a long time and then left me a message saying i either had a faulty HD or is wasnt connected correctly.
