Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

Did you check that article, Build Your Own PC, off PCMech? There's a page in there thats called "Initial Boot-up".

What make and model is your powersupply. Do you have both power connectors plugged into the motherboard (24 pin and 4 pin). I think this sounds like you may be shorting out somewhere. You may want to consider an out of case build to see if you can get it up and running http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409
You may also want to try reseating the RAM or trying to boot with just one stick installed (see your motherboard manual to check which memory slot to use).

It turns off around step 3c. Not sure if the hard drive is spinning up or not.

The power supply is a Just PC, JPC 450 - 12 V. It came with the case.

It's connected to the motherboard in 3 places. The 24 pin connector, a standard 4 pin connector and another square 4 pin.

Using just 1 stick of ram didn't help so I'm going to try taking it out of the case

this does seem like a powersuplly issue to me. Do you have any other powersupplies that you know work that you could test with. Maybe someone else has another idea? Never heard of Just PC powersupplies you are better off with a better unit anyway, you have a nice parts list there it's really not worth skimping on the powersupply. see the first 2 stickies here...http://forum.pcmech.com/forumdisplay.php?f=5
I am assuming that psu came in your case?
Hmm, on my build I know the first thing the motherboard looks for when I power on is my graphics card, perhaps the card is shot? hope this helps

Is the heatsink installed properly? The push pins aren't fun to work with.

Im not real up to date on this sorta stuff but i think the bios should load next? so have you tried replacing the bios battery?

i wouldnt of thought it would be the GC if it displays the info to start with. and if it powers up ok i wouldnt really suspect the PSU...
but i would be thinking bois and maybe cpu.

But as i said im no pro just a few thoughts.

Ok, I don't think its the graphics card. I removed it and the same thing happened (except the display of course)

I'm pretty sure the heat sink is on good. Those push pins are a pain but I got them in. Wouldn't it take a bit longer for heat to become an issue? Or at least a bit more varied time?

I guess I should go ahead and get a different power supply. I was kind of wary of that splitter the graphics card had to connect to 2 standard power connectors anyway.

Try unplugging all I/O devices except the monitor and PC. Then turn on the monitor and then the PC...and see what happens. My computer has been doing the same thing and I also thought it was the power supply but it wasn't, nor was it the vid card. If it does startup correctly plug in a wired mouse and keyboard and reboot and go from there.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it but i have heard of problems with the dual core Pentiums and the MSI P4N SLI-FI motherboard. I am about to build a new pc and was about to start a new thread about this issue but maybe this is a better place to address it? This may be causing your problems any one know?

Actually, it's only had a keyboard attatched to it once.

Ok, I looked into this and the problem is appearantly that they just function as single core. Also, according to MSI, it's just the 820 and I have the 830

If the heatsink is not fully contacting the CPU, that's about how much time it would take to overheat and shut down. You may *think* the pushpins are fully seated and locked, but I bet they aren't.
