New Build problem

Hello!
Put it all together using your BYOPC guide and turned it on. Get no picture or feed at all. The POST code display keeps showing 3.9..

Have just followed the instructions in Hal 9000's mail ie out of the case and just the CPU, fan, RAM and video card connected and the result is the same.

Specs are as follows:
mobo: Abit AA8 3rd Eye
CPU: P4 660
RAM: Kingmax DDR2 1/2 gig x 4 (have done process above with each stick on it's own to no avail)
Video Card:ATI X1800 vid card
Case: Diabolic Custom Case Blue
Drive: Maxtor SATA 150 300gb

Any ideas you have will be VERY much appreciated....
I await your instructions Obi Wan...!!!!

What brand power supply are you using?

Does it have a 20 pin or 24 pin motherboard power connector?

Do you have the other 4 pin power connector plugged into the motherboard?

The power unit is an ATX 450W made by Tecnami. The cable from the power supply is a 20 pin and the mobo has a 24 pin socket so I bought the 20 to 24 pin adpater cable.

The 4 pin IS plugged into the motherboard.

You really should get a ATX 2.0 power supply that has a 24 pin motherboard power connection. Those 20 to 24 pin adapters aren't really recommended, especially if the power supply is a low quality one.

I have to agree - an Intel 660 and a X1800 video card are going to suck quite a bit of power. I don't think an ATX 1.0 (20 pin) unit will be up to the job (especially a low quality one).

Possibly. Those 4 extra pins on the main connector are there for a reason.

New Build Problem - Phase 2!

Okay as suggested I've just got the new power source listed above and I've connected it just as Hal 9000 suggests and now it's doing even LESS! (and doing my head in...) All that happens now when I short the power pins is that the mobo and all fans flash briefly into life for about 1/2 a second and then stop......

The Post code start with 83 as it starts. Then everything stops straight away and it shows 9b, then 36, 9f and then it resets to 83 and the fans all spin for 1/2 a second....

Please help because I'm really getting the impression someone up there does NOT want me to build computers.....!!

Is the heatsink mounted correctly? Those pins are pretty hard to fully snap in and lock. When a P4 overheats, it shuts down immediately.

No the heatsink is mounted fine - I've got on of those vapochill fans that really lock it down...

Looks like the mobo is going back. Does anyone have any good suggestions for a P4 compatible mobo, 4 ram slots, pci-e and super for gaming ....????
